With तुम, the verb to be is हौ.

How It Works

हौ is the helper for you when you use तुम, the friendly everyday word. It is short and you will use it all the time.

SentenceMeaning
तुम ठीक हौ।You are fine.
तुम कहाँ हौ?Where are you?
तुम चाय पियत हौ।You are drinking tea.

To say no, put नाहीं before it: तुम घरे नाहीं हौ. Often the helper is left out in a short answer.

Do not use हौ with आप. Say आप ठीक अहैं. With तू the helper is अहस, and with हम it is अही.

In Ayodhya and Sultanpur you may hear अहौ instead of हौ. They mean the same thing.
