ऊ / ई
He, She, This and That
ऊ means he, she, it or that, and ई means this or the person here.
How It Works
The pronouns are short and simple.
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ऊ | he, she, it, that | ऊ घरे अहै। |
| ई | this, this person | ई हमार भाई अहै। |
There is no he/she split. You know who is meant from the context, or from the gender of a past verb: ऊ गवा (he went), ऊ गई (she went).
For a group or a respected person, the verb is plural: ऊ आवत अहैं (they are coming, or he or she is coming, with respect). To make a group clear, add लोग: ऊ लोग.
These words have related forms: ओका (to him or her), ओकर (his or her), एका (to this one), एकर (of this one). You will meet them one by one in later lessons.
