Verb Stem + دینا

An Action Directed Outward or Completed

Level 3

Keep the first verb bare; change the form of دینا.

How It Works

In a transitive perfective, the doer commonly takes نے. Compare مریم نے پیغام بھیج دیا with مریم نے تصویر بھیج دی; the unmarked object selects دیا or دی.

A request can use the respectful form دیجیے: دروازہ بند کر دیجیے. The first verb remains کر; the second verb carries the request form.

Do not assign one English word to every use of دینا. Nor does every compound containing it need نے: an established combination such as چل دینا, “set off,” follows its own intransitive pattern.

Examples (4)

  1. مریم نے پیغام بھیج دیا۔

    Maryam sent off the message.

The unmarked masculine object selects دیا.

  2. مریم نے تصویر بھیج دی۔

    Maryam sent off the picture.

    The feminine object selects دی.

  3. دروازہ بند کر دیجیے۔

    Please close the door.

کر stays bare before respectful دیجیے.

  4. بلال خاموشی سے چل دیا۔

    Bilal quietly set off.

This established intransitive combination has no نے.
