Treat each pronoun plus نے as a short unit.

How It Works

Use میں نے for the speaker and ہم نے for a group including the speaker. Do not replace میں with the مجھ form used before postpositions such as سے.

For a non-honorific singular person already mentioned, use اس نے. Respectful reference or a plural group can use انہوں نے; the English translation depends on context.

These phrases identify the doer, but they do not restore subject agreement. In انہوں نے تصویر دیکھی, the unmarked feminine object تصویر selects دیکھی, whether انہوں نے means one respected person or several people.

  1. میں نے کھڑکی کھولی۔

    I opened the window.

    میں stays unchanged before نے.

  2. اس نے کھڑکی کھولی۔

    They opened the window.

    اس نے refers to one non-honorific person; English singular “they” leaves gender open.

  3. انہوں نے کھڑکی کھولی۔

    They opened the window.

    The doer may be a group or one respected person.

  4. ہم نے دو تصویریں دیکھیں۔

    We saw two pictures.

    The speaker’s group uses ہم نے; the pictures control دیکھیں.

Common Mistakes

  • Using مجھ as the ordinary subject before نے.

    مجھ نے کھڑکی کھولی۔
    میں نے کھڑکی کھولی۔

    Use میں نے; مجھ occurs with other postpositions, such as مجھ سے.
