Negative Adverbial Participle

The negative adverbial participle (не + дієприслівник) describes an action that does not happen while the main action is occurring. It is typically set off by commas and requires the same subject for both actions.

How It Works

The negative adverbial participle is a sophisticated tool for describing how an action is performed by stating what is not being done simultaneously.

1. Spelling Rules:
In most cases, не is written separately (e.g., не знаючи). However, it is written as one word if:

  • The verb cannot exist without не (e.g., ненавидячи - hating, нехтуючи - neglecting).
  • The prefix is недо-, indicating insufficiency (e.g., недобачаючи - not seeing well).

2. Learner Tips:

  • Spelling: Adverbial participles always end in -и (e.g., не знаючи), never -і.
  • Distinction: Distinguish between the preposition незважаючи на (despite), written as one word, and the literal action не зважаючи на (not paying attention), written separately.

3. The Same-Subject Rule:
Crucially, the person performing the main verb must be the same person 'not doing' the action in the participle. While generally incorrect in impersonal sentences, they are grammatically correct in impersonal sentences that contain an infinitive, provided the logical subject remains the same.

4. Case Government:
When a participle is negated, its direct object often shifts from the accusative to the genitive of negation. For example: знаючи правду (Acc.) vs. не знаючи правди (Gen.).

5. Punctuation:
Phrases containing these participles (adverbial participial phrases) are generally separated by commas. However, commas are typically omitted for fixed idiomatic expressions or when a single participle follows the verb and functions as an adverb of manner (answering 'how?').

Examples (4)

  1. Не знаючи броду, не лізь у воду.

Not knowing the ford, do not step into the water.

Word by Word: Not knowing ford, not climb into water.

A famous proverb where the negative participle 'не знаючи' sets a condition for the main command.

  2. Він пішов геть, не сказавши ні слова.

He walked away without saying a word.

Word by Word: He went away, not having said no word.

Here, 'не сказавши' is a perfective negative participle, indicating the action of speaking did not happen prior to or during the departure.

  3. Студентка сиділа в бібліотеці, не помічаючи часу.

The student sat in the library, not noticing the time.

Word by Word: Student sat in library, not noticing time.

Note that 'часу' (time) is in the genitive case because of the negation.

  4. Вона слухала музику, не закриваючи очей.

She listened to music without closing her eyes.

Word by Word: She listened music, not closing eyes.

The imperfective participle 'не закриваючи' shows a continuous state of not closing eyes during the main action.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Accusative case for the object instead of the Genitive.

    Не знаючи дорогу, він заблукав.
    Не знаючи дороги, він заблукав.

In Ukrainian, the object of a negated verb or participle usually moves to the Genitive case (дороги).

  • Dangling participle (subject mismatch).

Не маючи грошей, мені було сумно.
    Не маючи грошей, я сумував.

The subject of the main clause must be the one 'not having money'. In the incorrect version, the subject is 'it' (impersonal), while 'me' is in the dative.

Learn This First

To understand the negative adverbial participle, a learner needs to be familiar with the basic negation particle 'не' and its standard position before verbs. Additionally, they must already know how to form both imperfective and perfective adverbial participles, as the negative form simply applies the negation rule to these existing verbal structures.
