Plural Past Tense

The plural past tense in Ukrainian is gender-neutral and used for all plural subjects (ми, ви, вони). It is formed by adding -ли to the verb stem.

How It Works

In Ukrainian, the past tense functions more like a participle than a conjugated verb. This means it agrees with the subject in number and gender rather than 'person'.

1. Formation:
To form the plural past tense, take the infinitive, remove the -ти ending, and add -ли.

  • читати (to read) → чита- + -ли = читали
  • робити (to do) → роби- + -ли = робили

2. Consonant Stems and Dental Drops:
If the stem ends in a consonant, the -л- suffix usually attaches directly to that consonant (e.g., нести → несли). However, in verbs where the -с- before the infinitive ending represents an underlying dental consonant (д or т), this -с- is dropped before adding -ли:

  • вести (to lead) → вели (not весли)
  • плести (to braid) → плели

3. The Suffix -нути:
Many verbs ending in -нути drop this suffix when forming the past tense:

  • зникнути (to disappear) → зникли
  • замерзнути (to freeze) → замерзли

4. Irregular Motion Verbs:
The verb йти (to go) and its prefixed derivatives (like прийти or піти) have an irregular plural past tense stem where the root changes to йш-:

  • йти → йшли
  • прийти → прийшли
  • піти → пішли

5. Reflexive Verbs:
When using reflexive verbs, the reflexive suffix -ся is attached after the plural ending. After the vowel 'и', it usually shortens to -сь in modern speech, though -ся is also grammatically correct.

  • вмиватися → вмивали + -ся/-сь = вмивалися (or вмивались)

6. Usage:
Because the verb form is the same for 'we', 'you', and 'they', you often need to include the nominative subject pronoun for clarity unless the context makes it obvious who is performing the action.

Examples (4)

  1. Ми вчора довго гуляли в парку.

We walked in the park for a long time yesterday.

Word by Word: We yesterday long walked in park.

The verb 'гуляли' is the plural past form of 'гуляти'.

  2. Студенти вже написали тест.

The students have already written the test.

Word by Word: Students already wrote test.

Here, 'написали' is the plural past form of the perfective verb 'написати'.

  3. Ви бачили цей фільм?

Have you (plural) seen this movie?

Word by Word: You saw this film?

The plural form 'бачили' is used for the plural 'you' (ви).

  4. Вони швидко бігли додому.

    They were running home quickly.

Word by Word: They quickly ran home.

Verbs like 'бігти' retain the 'г' in the plural past: 'бігли'.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding person-specific endings (like -мо) to the past tense.

    Ми читалимо книжку.
    Ми читали книжку.

Learners often try to apply present tense logic to the past. The past tense only marks number/gender, never person.

  • Trying to change the plural ending based on the gender of the group.

    Дівчата читалила.
    Дівчата читали.

In Ukrainian, the plural past tense is gender-neutral. Whether the group is all men, all women, or mixed, the ending is always -ли.

Learn This First

To understand the plural past tense, you need to be familiar with plural pronouns (we, you, they) and plural nouns, as these subjects determine the use of the -ли ending. Unlike the singular past tense, the plural form does not change based on gender.
