за умови що / за умови + Genitive
За Умови for Condition
Use за умови що (with a clause) or за умови + Genitive (with a noun) to express a strict requirement. It is more formal and restrictive than the general 'якщо' (if).
How It Works
The expression is built from the preposition за and the noun умова (condition) in the genitive case.
There are two primary ways to use it:
- With a Clause: Use за умови, що... followed by a full sentence (subject + verb). Note that a comma is mandatory before що.
- With a Noun: Use за умови followed by a noun phrase in the genitive case. This is very common in technical instructions and official rules.
- Plural Variant: In formal contexts, you may also encounter the plural form за умов followed by the genitive plural (e.g., за несприятливих погодних умов — under unfavorable weather conditions).
Register Note: In casual speech, Ukrainians usually prefer якщо. However, in professional writing, за умови is preferred for its precision. Avoid the common mistake of using при умові, which is considered a non-normative calque from Russian.
