Genitive Possession
The Genitive of Possession (родовий належності) indicates ownership or relationship. The owner noun is put in the genitive case and follows the object being owned.
How It Works
The Genitive of Possession is the standard way to link two nouns to show ownership, relationship, or affiliation. It answers the questions кого? (of whom?) or чого? (of what?).
1. Word Order:
Unlike English, which often puts the owner first (e.g., 'the boy's dog'), Ukrainian typically puts the owner second. The structure is: [Object] + [Owner in Genitive].
- Книжка (Object) + брата (Owner) = The brother's book.
2. Case Agreement:
A crucial rule is that the genitive noun does not change to match the gender or number of the object. Only the owner's case matters.
- Машина друга (The friend's car - feminine object)
- Будинок друга (The friend's house - masculine object)
3. Usage Nuances:
While possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives (like мамина) are common for single people in casual speech, the genitive is mandatory when:
- The owner is an inanimate object (e.g., 'the door of the house').
- The owner is plural (e.g., 'the bag of the girls').
- The owner is described by an adjective (e.g., 'the car of my older brother').
4. Endings Recap:
The owner noun takes standard genitive endings:
- Masculine: -а/-я (people/specific) or -у/-ю (abstract).
- Feminine: -и (hard) or -і/-ї (soft).
- Plural: Often a zero ending or -ів.
Examples (4)
- Це машина мого брата.
This is my brother's car.
Word by Word: This is car of-my of-brother.
The owner 'брат' (brother) is in the genitive case 'брата' and follows the object 'машина'.
- Двері будинку зачинені.
The doors of the building are closed.
Word by Word: Doors of-building [are] closed.
For inanimate objects like 'будинок' (building), the genitive is the only way to show possession.
- Я бачу сумку дівчат.
I see the girls' bag.
Word by Word: I see bag of-girls.
When the owner is plural ('дівчата' -> 'дівчат'), the genitive case must be used.
- Це твори Тараса Шевченка.
These are the works of Taras Shevchenko.
Word by Word: This [are] works of-Taras of-Shevchenko.
Proper names also take the genitive case to show authorship or possession.
Common Mistakes
Putting the possessor before the noun when the neutral order is wanted.
Different MeaningЦе брата книжка.Це книжка брата.'Це брата книжка' is grammatical, but a genitive possessor placed first is marked and puts the owner in focus. In neutral Ukrainian the possessor in the genitive follows the noun it modifies: 'книжка брата'.
Using 'від' to show who owns something.
Different MeaningКнижка від брата.Книжка брата.'Книжка від брата' is a correct phrase, but it means 'a book from the brother' (he gave or sent it). Ukrainian shows ownership with the genitive alone: 'книжка брата'.
Failing to decline the adjective describing the owner.
Машина мій брат.Машина мого брата.If the owner is a phrase, every word in that phrase (adjectives and pronouns) must be in the genitive case.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To express possession using the genitive case (e.g., 'the sister's book'), a learner must first be able to identify the gender of the noun that is the 'owner,' as the case endings are gender-dependent.

While the genitive of possession shows a relationship between two nouns, 'у мене є' is used to state that someone 'has' something (existential possession).
