Adverbial participles (дієприслівники) describe a secondary action performed by the same subject as the main verb. The timing depends on the aspect: Imperfective = same time; Perfective = before.

How It Works

Adverbial participles are indeclinable forms that function as adverbial modifiers. They must refer to the same subject as the main verb (with rare exceptions for impersonal sentences containing an infinitive). They do not have their own independent tense; their timing is relative to the main verb.

1. Stem Formation and Reflexives

  • Imperfective: Formed from the 3rd person plural present stem (e.g., читають → читаючи).
  • Perfective: Formed from the past tense/infinitive stem (e.g., прочитав → прочитавши).
  • Reflexives: For verbs ending in -ся, the suffix -сь is almost always used after the participle suffix (e.g., вмиваючись, вмившись).

2. Simultaneity (Imperfective Aspect)
Uses suffixes -учи/-ючи or -ачи/-ячи. The action happens at the same time as the main verb.
Example: Слухаючи музику, він працює. (Listening to music, he works.)

3. Anteriority (Perfective Aspect)
Uses suffixes -вши or -ши. The action was typically completed before the main action, or happens as a direct result.
Examples: Прочитавши книгу, вона лягла спати. (Having read the book, she went to sleep.) / Він упав, зламавши ногу. (He fell, breaking his leg.)

4. Negation
A negative adverbial participle is written separately from не (e.g., не знаючи), unless the verb requires it (e.g., ненавидячи) or uses the prefix недо- (e.g., недочуваючи).

5. Punctuation and Stress Nuances
An adverbial participial phrase is usually separated by commas. However, a crucial distinction exists for words like сидячи, стоячи, and лежачи:

  • If the stress is on the first syllable (сИдячи, стОячи, лЕжачи), they function as simple adverbs of manner and are not separated by commas (e.g., Він читав стОячи. - He read standing up).
  • If the stress is on the last syllable (сидячИ, стоячИ, лежачИ), they are true adverbial participles and require commas (e.g., СтоячИ біля вікна, він дивився на сад. - Standing by the window, he looked at the garden).

Examples (5)

  1. Співають ідучи дівчата.

    The girls sing while walking.

Word by Word: Sing walking girls.

The imperfective participle 'ідучи' shows that the walking and singing happen at the same time.

  2. Поставивши відро на землю, вона зупинилася.

Having placed the bucket on the ground, she stopped.

Word by Word: Having-placed bucket on ground, she stopped.

The perfective participle 'поставивши' indicates the action of placing the bucket was completed before she stopped.

  3. Він сидів біля вікна, читаючи газету.

He sat by the window, reading a newspaper.

Word by Word: He sat near window, reading newspaper.

The imperfective participle 'читаючи' describes a process happening simultaneously with the main action 'сидів'.

  4. Повернувшись додому, я відразу зателефонував мамі.

Having returned home, I immediately called my mom.

Word by Word: Having-returned home, I immediately called to-mom.

The perfective reflexive participle 'повернувшись' shows the return happened first.

  5. Не знаючи броду, не лізь у воду.

Not knowing the ford, don't go into the water.

Word by Word: Not knowing ford, not climb into water.

A famous proverb using a negative imperfective participle to show a state of not knowing while acting.

Common Mistakes

  • Dangling participle (subject mismatch).

Підходячи до будинку, у мене злетів капелюх.
Коли я підходив до будинку, у мене злетів капелюх.

In the incorrect version, the subject of the main clause is 'капелюх' (hat), implying the hat was approaching the house. The participle must share the subject of the main verb.

  • Confusing adverbial participles with active adjectives.

    Я бачив сяючи дівчину.
    Я бачив сяючу дівчину.

Adverbial participles (сяючи - while shining) are indeclinable. If you want to describe a noun, you must use an adjective or a participle that agrees in gender and case (сяючу).

  • Using participles in impersonal sentences without an infinitive.

    Слухаючи музику, мені стало сумно.
    Слухаючи музику, можна згадати минуле.

Generally, adverbial participles cannot be used in impersonal sentences (like 'мені стало сумно') because there is no grammatical subject. However, an exception exists: they can be used in impersonal sentences if the main predicate is an infinitive (like 'можна згадати').

Learn This First

To understand how adverbial participles function in relation to the main verb's time, a learner must first be able to form both imperfective and perfective adverbial participles. Additionally, a strong foundation in verbal aspect (imperfective vs. perfective) is essential, as the temporal relationship (simultaneity vs. anteriority) is directly derived from the aspect of the participle used.
