нести / носити

Determinate and Indeterminate Carrying

Level 3Sounds Like nesti / nositi

Ukrainian uses two different verbs for 'to carry' depending on the nature of the movement. Нести is for a specific, one-way trip (like carrying a box to the car right now). Носити is for repeated actions, general ability, or wearing clothes.

How It Works

1. Нести (Determinate / Unidirectional)
Use this verb when you are carrying something in one specific direction at a specific moment. The stress remains on the endings.

  • Present Tense: несу, несеш, несе, несемо, несете, несуть.
  • Past Tense: Note the masculine form ніс (the 'е' changes to 'і' in a closed syllable). Other forms are regular: несла, несло, несли.
  • Usage: 'Я несу ці квіти мамі' (I am carrying these flowers to my mother right now).

2. Носити (Indeterminate / Multidirectional)
Use this verb for habits, carrying things back and forth, or the general state of 'wearing' something. Note the mobile stress: it falls on the ending in the first person but jumps to the stem for all other forms.

  • Present Tense: ношу (note the с → ш mutation), носиш, носить, носимо, носите, носять.
  • Past Tense: носив, носила, носило, носили.
  • Usage: 'Я завжди ношу ручку' (I always carry a pen).

3. Nuance: Wearing Clothes
While 'носити' describes the habit of wearing something (e.g., 'Він завжди носить джинси'), Ukrainian speakers prefer the бути в + Locative construction to describe what someone is wearing at a specific moment.

  • Habit: Він носить окуляри (He wears glasses).
  • Specific moment: Сьогодні він у новій сорочці (Today he is wearing/is in a new shirt).

4. Grammar and Case
Both verbs require the Accusative case for the object being carried. If the object is a person or animal, use the animate accusative rules.

Examples (5)

  1. Я несу цей подарунок другові.

I am carrying this gift to a friend (right now, one way).

Word by Word: I carry this gift to-friend.

Uses 'нести' because it is a specific action happening in one direction.

  2. Вона завжди носить із собою телефон.

She always carries a phone with her.

Word by Word: She always carries with self phone.

Uses 'носити' because it is a habitual, repeated action.

  3. Мій тато носить бороду.

    My dad wears a beard.

Word by Word: My dad wears beard.

'Носити' is the standard verb for wearing clothes, accessories, or facial hair.

  4. Він ніс важку сумку, коли я його побачив.

He was carrying a heavy bag when I saw him.

Word by Word: He carried heavy bag when I him saw.

Uses the past tense of 'нести' (ніс) for a specific moment in the past.

  5. Ми несемо відповідальність за це.

    We bear responsibility for this.

Word by Word: We carry responsibility for this.

'Нести' is used for figurative 'bearing' of abstract concepts like responsibility.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'нести' to mean 'wearing clothes'.

    Different MeaningЯ несу нову куртку.
    Я ношу нову куртку.

'Я несу куртку' means you are physically carrying the jacket in your hands to a destination. To say you are wearing it, you must use 'носити'.

  • Incorrect first-person conjugation of 'носити'.

    Я носю окуляри.
    Я ношу окуляри.

In the first-person singular (я), the 'с' in the stem changes to 'ш'. This is a standard mutation for second-conjugation verbs.

  • Confusing 'нести' with 'везти'.

    Я несу меблі на машині.
    Я везу меблі на машині.

'Нести' is specifically for carrying by hand or on one's person. If you are using a vehicle, you must use the appropriate verb for transport.
