в/у і на + Accusative (Direction)
Accusative Direction with В/у and На
When you move toward a destination, Ukrainian uses the prepositions в/у (into/to) or на (onto/to) followed by the Accusative case.
How It Works
To express direction in Ukrainian, you must combine a motion verb with a specific prepositional phrase in the Accusative case.
1. Choosing the Preposition:
- в / у: Used for buildings, rooms, enclosed vehicles (в автобус), and most geographical locations, including countries (e.g., в Україну is the mandatory form for Ukraine) and plural mountain ranges (в Карпати). The choice follows euphony rules.
- на: Used for surfaces, open spaces, open vehicles (на велосипед), cardinal directions, and events. It is also mandatory for islands (на Кубу), single mountains (на Говерлу), peninsulas (на Аляску, with the notable exception of в Крим for Crimea), and certain regions (на Донбас, на Волинь). Note: на is also heavily used with enclosed public transport when referring to taking a route, service, or mode of travel (e.g., сісти на автобус, на поїзд).
2. Functional Exceptions:
Some institutions and buildings always take на instead of в/у, even though they are enclosed spaces. Common examples include: на пошту (to the post office), на вокзал (to the station), and на завод (to the factory).
3. Noun Endings:
- Feminine: Change -а/-я to -у/-ю (see feminine accusative). Note: Feminine nouns ending in a consonant (e.g., ніч, подорож) remain unchanged.
- Masculine Inanimate & Neuter: Inanimate masculine and all singular neuter nouns stay the same as the Nominative (see inanimate accusative).
- Masculine Animate: Singular animate nouns take the Genitive ending -а/-я (see animate masculine accusative).
- Plurals: Inanimate plurals remain unchanged. Animate plurals (like people or animals) generally change to match the Genitive plural (see animate accusative plural). Animate neuter plurals (young animals) can take either the Nominative or the Genitive in the Accusative plural (e.g., бачити телята OR бачити телят). Exception: When expressing joining a group, profession, or status with в, animate nouns take the Nominative plural (e.g., піти в гості, в депутати).
Important: To express visiting or going to someone, Ukrainian uses the preposition до + Genitive. However, на + Accusative is used when the physical motion is literally onto or directed against a person or animal (e.g., сісти на коня, дивитися на брата).
Examples (6)
- Я йду в школу.
I am going to school.
Word by Word: I go into school.
Movement into a building (feminine noun 'школа' changes to 'школу').
- Він кладе телефон на стіл.
He puts the phone on the table.
Word by Word: He puts phone onto table.
Movement onto a surface. 'Стіл' is masculine inanimate, so it remains unchanged.
- Ми їдемо на вокзал.
We are going to the station.
Word by Word: We go onto station.
'На' is used for specific functional buildings like 'вокзал' (station) or 'пошта' (post office).
- Студенти поспішають на лекцію.
The students are hurrying to the lecture.
Word by Word: Students hurry onto lecture.
'На' is used for events and activities.
- Ми їдемо в гори.
We are going to the mountains.
Word by Word: We go into mountains.
For inanimate plurals like 'гори', the Accusative form is identical to the Nominative plural.
- Він дивиться в ніч.
He looks into the night.
Word by Word: He looks into night.
Feminine nouns ending in a consonant (3rd declension) like 'ніч' do not change in the Accusative.
Common Mistakes
Using the Locative case for direction.
Я йду в школі.Я йду в школу.'В школі' means you are already inside the school walking around. To say you are traveling 'to' the school, you must use the Accusative 'в школу'.
Using 'на' instead of 'в/у' for direction to the country.
Я їду на Україну.Я їду в Україну.In modern standard Ukrainian, 'в Україну' is the correct form for traveling to the country.
Forgetting to change feminine endings.
Він іде на пошта.Він іде на пошту.Feminine nouns ending in -а must change to -у in the Accusative when indicating direction.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn the Accusative of direction, you first need to understand the basic Accusative case (direct object) and its endings. You also need to be familiar with the prepositions 'в/у' and 'на', and understand the difference between location (where) and direction (where to), typically signaled by the question word 'куди'.
- Accusative direct object
Understanding the basic function and case endings of the Accusative case is essential before applying it to directional movement.
Level 1 - кудиQuestion Word Куди
The question word 'куди' (where to) is the functional trigger for using the Accusative case with prepositions of direction.
Level 1 - у/вPreposition У or В
Familiarity with the prepositions 'у/в' and 'на' is required as they are the specific markers used in this directional construction.
