хіба що

Restrictive Хіба Що

Level 6Sounds Like híba ŝo

Use хіба що to point out the one specific thing that would change a situation. It translates to 'unless' or 'except for the fact that.'

How It Works

The conjunction хіба що is a fixed phrase used to qualify a preceding statement. Unlike a neutral якщо (if), хіба що implies that the condition being mentioned is the only exception.

1. Usage with Clauses:
When introducing a subordinate clause, it functions like 'unless.' It is almost always preceded by a comma.
Я не піду гуляти, хіба що перестане йти дощ. (I won't go for a walk, unless it stops raining.)

2. Usage with Phrases:
It can also introduce specific nouns or adverbs. Crucially, it does not change the case of the following noun (unlike prepositions like 'крім'). The noun keeps the case required by the main verb.
Він нічого не п'є, хіба що чай. (He drinks nothing, except perhaps tea — 'чай' remains in the accusative).

3. Nuance:
It often suggests that the exception is unlikely, unexpected, or a last resort. If you want to express a neutral 'if not,' use не with якщо instead.

Examples (4)

  1. Він ніколи не запізнюється, хіба що трапиться щось надзвичайне.

He is never late, unless something extraordinary happens.

Word by Word: He never not is-late, unless that happens something extraordinary.

Here, the pattern introduces a low-probability exception to his usual punctuality.

  2. Ми не зможемо купити цей будинок, хіба що нам дадуть кредит.

We won't be able to buy this house, unless they give us a loan.

Word by Word: We not will-be-able to-buy this house, unless to-us they-give loan.

The speaker uses 'хіба що' to show that a loan is the only (and perhaps uncertain) way the purchase can happen.

  3. У лісі було тихо, хіба що десь далеко стукав дятел.

It was quiet in the forest, except perhaps for a woodpecker drumming far away.

Word by Word: In forest was quiet, unless that somewhere far knocked woodpecker.

In this descriptive context, it highlights the single sound that broke the silence.

  4. Я не буду їсти, хіба що яблуко.

I won't eat, except maybe an apple.

Word by Word: I not will eat, unless apple.

Notice that 'яблуко' stays in the accusative case because it is the object of the implied verb 'їсти'.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing 'хіба що' as a single word.

    Я прийду, хібащо буде дощ.
Я прийду, хіба що буде дощ.

In Ukrainian, 'хіба що' must always be written as two separate words.

  • Forcing the Genitive case after 'хіба що'.

Він не любить овочів, хіба що моркви.
Він не любить овочів, хіба що моркву.

Unlike the preposition 'крім' (except for), 'хіба що' is a conjunction. The noun following it must match the case required by the verb in the main sentence (here, Accusative 'моркву' for the object of 'любити').
