เอา ... ไป / มา

Taking and Bringing with เอา

Level 2

เอา + object + ไป / มา
• ไป: Taking something away in the selected context.
• มา: Bringing something toward the reference point in the selected context.
The last example leaves the known object unstated.

How It Works

1. Read direction with the situation:
The book, money and omitted-object examples use มา for bringing toward the understood reference point. The trash and clothes examples use ไป for taking away. These selected readings do not impose the speaker’s current physical position on every use. Read any stated destination or recipient as part of the full clause.

2. Read the displayed object order:
เอาหนังสือมา and เอาร่มมา put the written object between เอา and มา. The second exercise requests exactly เอาร่มมา. เอามาร่ม does not copy that requested order. This comparison does not judge every possible spoken, topicalized or elliptical construction. เอามาด้วยนะ in the last example leaves a known object unstated, so an overt object is not compulsory in every example.

3. Compare เอา and พา in context:
The first exercise requests พาเพื่อนมาบ้าน for bringing a friend to the house. Keep that task-specific choice without claiming that every เอา with a person is impossible, impolite, possessive or denies that person’s agency. The selected NIU dictionary contains a prisoner as an object of เอา, and the selected lesson also displays พา with books and food. Those written witnesses do not establish a strict people-versus-things division or a social meaning for every context.

4. Keep omitted information contextual:
The first translation understands the recipient as me, but the Thai does not write ฉัน. The money question is translated as did you bring money in the selected situation; its written clause does not independently fix a subject or past tense. The clothes example does not name a laundry area. The trash example includes ทิ้ง for throwing away; do not lose that disposal action when translating the movement.

5. Read request wording without guarantees:
หน่อย and นะ contribute to the requests in these sentences. This does not guarantee politeness, friendliness or a particular spoken tone. With the known omitted object, ด้วย is read as along or also.

6. Evidence scope:
The selected NIU lexical entries and lesson support the displayed taking, bringing and object-order comparisons. They do not establish measured frequency, a universal register ranking between เอา and นำ, an exact replacement rule for all contexts, or an acoustic judgment of these exercises.

Examples (5)

  1. เอาหนังสือมาให้หน่อย

Please bring the book to me.

Word by Word: take + book + come + give + request particle

The selected reading brings the book toward the speaker and understands the recipient as me; ฉัน is not written. ให้หน่อย contributes request wording. Compare the linked request pattern without guaranteeing politeness or reading หน่อย as a quantity of books.

  2. อย่าลืมเอาขยะไปทิ้งนะ

Don’t forget to take the trash away to throw it out.

    Word by Word: don’t + forget + take + trash + go + throw away + particle

ไป contributes movement away in this reading and ทิ้ง supplies the disposal action. The selected English out belongs to throwing away; the Thai does not contain a separate ออก. นะ remains a sentence particle, without a guaranteed friendly tone.

  3. เอาเงินมาหรือเปล่า

    Did you bring any money?

Word by Word: take + money + come + or not

The selected situation understands you bringing money toward the reference point. Neither you nor a past-tense marker is written. หรือเปล่า frames the question; the example does not establish frequency or a guaranteed answer.

  4. เอาเสื้อผ้าไปซัก

Take the clothes away to wash them.

Word by Word: take + clothes + go + wash

ไป contributes taking the clothes away and ซัก identifies washing. The selected request reading does not supply a written subject or name a laundry area.

  5. เอามาด้วยนะ

    Bring it along too.

Word by Word: take + come + with + particle

The selected translation understands it from context; no object noun is written. ด้วย contributes along or also here. This retained example prevents an absolute requirement for an overt object, and นะ does not guarantee a particular social or spoken effect.

Common Mistakes

  • Not using the requested พา wording for bringing a friend.

    เอาเพื่อนมาบ้าน
    พาเพื่อนมาบ้าน

This task requests พาเพื่อนมาบ้าน with พา for bringing a friend to the house. เอาเพื่อนมาบ้าน does not meet that requested wording. The comparison does not declare every เอา with a person ungrammatical or assign objectification, lack of agency or a sexual meaning to every such clause.

  • Not copying the requested เอา + ร่ม + มา order.

    เอามาร่ม
    เอาร่มมา

The complete wording requested here is เอาร่มมา, with ร่ม between เอา and มา. เอามาร่ม changes that requested order. This task does not forbid every final noun, spoken repair or contextual omission; the retained เอามาด้วยนะ example has no overt object.
