ที่ (สถานที่)

At a Place

Level 1

ที่ marks a location in ที่บ้าน and ที่กรุงเทพ. Read it with the surrounding verb and place name.

How It Works

1. A Place With an Action
In ทำงานที่บ้าน, ที่บ้าน gives the place of the work. The location phrases ที่บ้าน, ที่โรงเรียน and ที่กรุงเทพ mean at home, at school and in Bangkok in these contexts. They do not impose one English preposition for every place.

2. A Complete Location Statement
The first example and exercise use อยู่ in ผมอยู่ที่บ้าน. Copy the complete statement requested by the exercise. The shorter ผมที่บ้าน does not reproduce it; a fragment in another conversation needs its own context. In อยู่บ้าน, อยู่ appears without ที่. These two displayed patterns do not measure how often ที่ is omitted or make one inherently more complete.

3. Location and Containment
The second exercise requests กุญแจอยู่ในกล่อง, saying the keys are inside the box. ใน expresses inside in this phrase. Compared with กุญแจที่กล่อง, the requested sentence adds อยู่ as well as changing the marker. This is not a contrast involving only one preposition, nor a ban on ที่ with every container.

4. A Destination With Motion
Compare ไปตลาด and ไปที่ตลาด with the linked ไป / มา entry. The complete wording and context determine the destination reading; adding ที่ does not by itself guarantee heavy emphasis.

5. Location Words and Place Nouns
ที่นี่, ที่นั่น and ที่โน่น refer to here, there and over there in the location readings shown. ห้องน้ำอยู่ที่ไหน? uses ที่ไหน after อยู่; it does not insert an additional ที่ before ที่ไหน. Read ที่พัก, ที่ทำงาน and ที่จอดรถ as accommodation, workplace and parking place in their own contexts, rather than a rule that ที่ can form a place noun from any verb.

6. The Clock-Time Exercise
The third exercise asks for เจอกันตอน 5 โมง with ตอน introducing the stated meeting time. เจอกันที่ 5 โมง does not reproduce that requested phrase. This location lesson does not define every other role of ที่, such as relative clauses or numbered identifiers. Learn those in their own complete constructions.

Examples (4)

  1. ผมอยู่ที่บ้าน

    I am at home.

Word by Word: I [am/stay] at house

ผม is the displayed first-person form; อยู่ที่บ้าน locates the speaker at home. This sentence does not independently establish the speaker's identity.

  2. เขาทำงานที่กรุงเทพ

    He works in Bangkok.

Word by Word: [He] work at Bangkok

ที่กรุงเทพ gives the location of the work. He is a selected English reading of เขา here; the Thai form alone does not establish gender.

  3. กินที่ร้านหรือกลับบ้านคะ?

Eat at the shop or return home?

Word by Word: Eat at shop or return home [question particle]?

ที่ร้าน names the place to eat and กลับบ้าน means return home. The eating context gives ร้าน the selected shop or eating-place reading; taking food home would be an additional contextual inference. คะ closes the displayed question.

  4. ห้องน้ำอยู่ที่ไหน?

    Where is the bathroom?

Word by Word: Bathroom be located where?

This uses 'ที่ไหน' (where) after 'อยู่' to ask for a location.

Common Mistakes

  • Reproduce the complete location statement with อยู่.

    ผมที่บ้าน
    ผมอยู่ที่บ้าน

The task requests ผมอยู่ที่บ้าน, stating that the speaker is at home. ผมที่บ้าน omits the requested อยู่ predicate; it is not the same full statement. This task does not prohibit context-dependent fragments in other conversations.

  • State that the keys are inside the box with อยู่ใน.

    กุญแจที่กล่อง
    กุญแจอยู่ในกล่อง

The task requests กุญแจอยู่ในกล่อง. It includes the อยู่ predicate and ใน for inside the box. กุญแจที่กล่อง lacks อยู่ and uses a different marker, so the pair does not isolate a single-preposition difference or ban every other container phrase.

  • Use ตอน in the requested meeting-time phrase.

    เจอกันที่ 5 โมง
    เจอกันตอน 5 โมง

Copy เจอกันตอน 5 โมง with ตอน introducing the displayed time. เจอกันที่ 5 โมง does not match this requested wording. Do not generalize this exercise into a rule covering every numbered or temporal construction containing ที่.
