Verbs In A Row
In ไปซื้อของ, 'go' leads into the purpose 'buy things' without a word between the verbs. In ตกแตก, 'fall' is followed by the result 'break'. These chains express different relationships; they are not all lists of successive actions.
How It Works
Thai can connect verbs without a conjunction in a serial verb construction. Read the relationship between the verbs rather than adding an English connector word for word.
1. Purpose And Result
In เขาไปซื้อของ, ไป expresses going and ซื้อของ supplies the purpose, buying things. In แก้วตกแตก, ตก describes the fall and แตก its result, breaking. English can express these relationships with 'to' or 'and', but those English words do not require a matching word between the Thai verbs.
2. Verb And Object Order
For the go-and-buy construction shown here, ไป precedes ซื้อของ. In เขาหยิบหนังสือมาอ่าน, หนังสือ follows หยิบ and is the book picked up and read. In the take-and-go pattern, เอา is followed by the object and then the direction, as in เอาของไป. These examples do not establish one word order for every combination of verbs.
3. Negating The Intended Action
For the task that denies going to buy things, put ไม่ before ไปซื้อของ: ไม่ไปซื้อของ. The displayed ไปไม่ซื้อของ does not express that same denial of going to buy. Negation inside a verb sequence must be interpreted with its particular construction and context; it is not a rule for negating only the result in every chain.
4. Who Takes Part
In the first example, เขา is the person going and buying. In the book example, เขา picks up the book and reads it. In แก้วตกแตก, the glass both falls and breaks. Identify the participants from the complete construction; a result does not always introduce a different participant.
5. Direction In A Chain
ไป and มา can contribute direction as well as occur as motion verbs. In the book example, มา contributes movement toward the relevant reference point before reading. The reference point can be the speaker or another point established by context. A direction word after an action verb does not necessarily name a separate later action.
6. Read The Whole Construction
Thai verbs never change form: they do not inflect for tense, person, or number. The relationship between verbs comes from the words and construction, not from conjugation endings. Serial verbs can present a complex event, but not every string of adjacent verbs forms one construction.
Examples (3)
- เขาไปซื้อของ
He went to buy things.
Word by Word: He + go + buy + things
In this example, ไป is the motion verb and ซื้อของ gives the purpose, buying things. There is no word corresponding to English 'to' between them. The translation selects a past reading; the verbs themselves do not carry a past-tense ending.
- แก้วตกแตก
The glass fell and broke.
Word by Word: Glass + fall + break
ตก gives the action, falling, and แตก gives its result, breaking. The glass is the participant in both parts, and no word for 'and' separates the verbs.
- เขาหยิบหนังสือมาอ่าน
He picked up a book to read.
Word by Word: He + pick up + book + come + read
หยิบ expresses picking up, หนังสือ identifies the book, มา contributes movement toward the relevant reference point, and อ่าน gives reading as the purpose. The same person picks up and reads the book in this example.
Common Mistakes
Inserting 'and' (และ) into the requested go-and-buy chain.
ไปและซื้อของไปซื้อของFor the requested meaning 'go to buy things', use ไปซื้อของ. Adding และ explicitly coordinates the verbs instead of using the displayed motion-and-purpose chain. Coordination is a separate choice; this task does not make every use of และ between verbs incorrect.
Misordering the verbs and object in the requested go-and-buy construction.
ซื้อไปของไปซื้อของIn ไปซื้อของ, ไป introduces going, and ของ follows ซื้อ as the things to buy. ซื้อไปของ does not follow that requested arrangement. This is not a ban on every construction with ไป after another verb; postverbal direction words have their own roles.
Misplacing the negative marker when trying to negate the whole intent.
ไปไม่ซื้อของไม่ไปซื้อของFor the requested denial of going to buy things, place ไม่ before ไปซื้อของ: ไม่ไปซื้อของ. The displayed ไปไม่ซื้อของ changes which part is negated and does not give that same intended denial. Read internal negation in its own construction and context.
