อยาก

Want to Do

Level 1

The examples show อยากไปเที่ยว, ไม่อยากทำงานวันนี้, and อยากได้โทรศัพท์ใหม่. Compare the complete constructions rather than assuming one fixed form for every possible reply.

How It Works

1. Read the Desired Action
ผมอยากไปเที่ยว states the speaker’s wish to go on an outing or travel. The dictionary gives อยาก as want or desire and also want to or wish to. The papaya-salad question places อยาก before กินส้มตำ. Neither sentence establishes a universal register or frequency rule.

2. Read the Desired Object
อยากได้โทรศัพท์ใหม่ says that the speaker wants a new phone, with the speaker inferred from context. The coffee exercise requests อยากได้กาแฟ / เอากาแฟ, including the displayed เอา option. อยากกาแฟ does not reproduce the requested constructions; this task does not decide every possible shortened reply.

3. Read the Negative Scope
ไม่อยากทำงานวันนี้ says that the inferred speaker does not want to work today. In the second exercise, ไม่ precedes อยาก in the requested ไม่อยากไป reading. อยากไม่ไป places the negative inside the desired action instead and may express wanting not to go in another context; it does not reproduce this task’s requested negative-of-wanting form.

4. Compare Separate Constructions
Read อยากให้ for wanting another person to act or wanting a result. The dictionary also attests อยากจะ; the presence of จะ alone does not guarantee softness or politeness. Compare ต้องการ for want, need, or require without restricting it to all formal situations or treating it as obligatory whenever someone speaks formally.

5. Notice Inferred Subjects
The last three native examples do not write their subjects. [I] and [you] are supplied for the intended readings, not translated from an explicit pronoun. ไหม marks the displayed question and ครับ is its sentence-final particle. Interpret replies and particles in context rather than assuming every standalone form has one taboo meaning.

Examples (4)

  1. ผมอยากไปเที่ยว

I want to go on an outing.

Word by Word: I | want | go | on an outing

Here, 'อยาก' is placed before the verb 'ไป' (to go) to show the speaker's desire.

  2. ไม่อยากทำงานวันนี้

[I] do not want to work today.

Word by Word: Not want work today

ไม่ precedes อยาก in the displayed no-desire-to-work statement. [I] is inferred from context, not an explicit native pronoun.

  3. อยากได้โทรศัพท์ใหม่

    [I] want a new phone.

Word by Word: Want get telephone new

The displayed phrase is อยากได้โทรศัพท์ใหม่, with ได้ followed by the desired phone. [I] is inferred; this example does not prescribe every possible way to request an object.

  4. อยากกินส้มตำไหมครับ

Do [you] want to eat papaya salad?

Word by Word: want | eat | papaya salad | [question] | [sentence-final particle]

The question contains อยากกินส้มตำไหมครับ. [You] is inferred as its intended addressee; no subject pronoun is written.

Common Mistakes

  • Not using the complete coffee-request constructions specified in this task.

    อยากกาแฟ
    อยากได้กาแฟ / เอากาแฟ

Reproduce อยากได้กาแฟ / เอากาแฟ for this exercise. อยากกาแฟ does not reproduce either specified construction. Other request words or contextual shortened replies are outside this task’s comparison.

  • Using a different negative scope when this exercise requests not wanting to go.

    อยากไม่ไป
    ไม่อยากไป

The task requests ไม่อยากไป, with ไม่ negating the desire to go. อยากไม่ไป can express wanting not to go in another context; it does not reproduce the requested negative-of-wanting form.
