เอา

Taking and Choosing

Level 2

The examples use เอา to choose an item, offer coffee, decline something, or ask for plain water. The meaning comes from the full construction and context.

How It Works

1. Choices and Offers
Read เอาอันนี้ครับ as choosing this item and เอากาแฟไหม as asking whether the listener wants coffee. In a relevant offer context, ไม่เอา declines the offered thing. The words themselves do not include thanks or guarantee a particular tone of politeness.

2. Wanting to Do an Action
The exercise requests ฉันอยากไปกรุงเทพ for wanting to go to Bangkok, using อยาก. ฉันเอาไปกรุงเทพ can instead describe taking an understood object to Bangkok; it does not reproduce the requested desire-to-go sentence. Compare ขอ in its own request constructions and ต้องการ in its own want or need examples, rather than assigning each word a fixed politeness rank.

3. Taking and Bringing
Compare เอาร่มไป, taking an umbrella away, with เอากาแฟมา, bringing coffee here. In เอาหนังสือมาให้ฉัน, ให้ introduces the stated recipient ฉัน. Do not infer that recipient from เอามาให้ alone. Compare พา in its own escorting or accompanying examples.

4. Read Other Constructions Separately
Study เอาไว้ and เอาแต่ in their complete linked examples; do not derive their meaning by replacing every เอา with English want. The NIU dictionary records take, bring, want, and get among the meanings of เอา. Its complete example เอานักโทษออกมาจากห้องขัง uses a person as the object in a nonsexual taking-out context, so a person object does not automatically make every เอา sentence sexual.

5. Questions Need Context
The coffee example explicitly names กาแฟ before ไหม. If an item or participant is omitted, interpret it from the conversation rather than inventing an object, recipient, or sexual meaning solely from the short form.

Examples (4)

  1. เอาอันนี้ครับ

    [I] will take this one.

Word by Word: take | this one | [particle]

In a choice context, the speaker selects this item. The first-person subject is inferred.

  2. เอากาแฟไหม

    [Do you] want coffee?

Word by Word: want | coffee | [question particle]

The speaker asks whether the listener wants coffee. The listener is inferred; กาแฟ names the offered item.

  3. ไม่เอา

    [I] do not want [it].

Word by Word: not | want/take

In an offer context, this declines the understood item. Neither a subject, object, nor thanks is explicitly written.

  4. ผมเอาน้ำเปล่าครับ

    I will have plain water.

    Word by Word: I | choose/want | plain water | [particle]

In an ordering context, the speaker chooses plain water. The sentence does not explicitly describe drinking it.

Common Mistakes

  • Not reproducing the requested sentence about wanting to go to Bangkok.

    ฉันเอาไปกรุงเทพ
    ฉันอยากไปกรุงเทพ

For the intended desire to go, this exercise requests ฉันอยากไปกรุงเทพ. ฉันเอาไปกรุงเทพ can describe taking an understood object to Bangkok, so it is not universally ungrammatical; it does not express the requested desire-to-go construction.

Learn This First

To use 'เอา' effectively, you need to understand basic Thai sentence structure and how to point to objects using demonstratives. It is also important to distinguish 'เอา' (wanting an object) from other 'want' verbs like 'อยาก' (wanting to do something).
