ช่วย + Verb + หน่อย
Please Do This
ช่วย (chûay) + [Verb Phrase] + หน่อย (nòi)
One way to ask someone to perform an action, often translated with English 'please'.
How It Works
Use ช่วย + [Verb Phrase] + หน่อย to ask someone to perform the actions shown in these examples. ช่วย has the lexical meaning 'help' and can introduce a request; หน่อย has the lexical meaning 'a little' and can soften the requested action. English may render the whole construction with 'please'. It does not require the listener to interpret the action as literally small, and it does not guarantee agreement or politeness.
1. The Displayed Order
In ช่วยเปิดประตูหน่อยครับ, ช่วย precedes เปิดประตู, and หน่อย follows that verb-object phrase. A final polite particle can follow หน่อย: compare ครับ and ค่ะ in their complete constructions. This is the order practiced in the door task, not a rule that every request or every use of หน่อย has one fixed position. The examples also show material after หน่อย, including ได้ไหมคะ and นะ.
2. Questions And Other Additions
ช่วยพูดช้าๆหน่อยได้ไหมคะ asks for slower speech in a question form. ได้ไหม presents the requested action as something the listener is asked whether they can do. Do not treat the longer form as automatically more polite in every setting. In ช่วยหยิบปากกาให้หน่อย, ให้ indicates doing the action for someone; 'for me' in the supplied English translation identifies the beneficiary from context, since an overt Thai first-person pronoun is absent. In ช่วยบอกเขาหน่อยนะ, นะ adds an appeal to the listener. A friendly or pleading interpretation depends on the situation and delivery.
3. The Three Practice Contrasts
The first task asks you to request opening the door with ช่วยเปิดประตูหน่อย. Its alternative ช่วยปิดประตูหน่อย asks for closing the door, so it does not convey the requested action. The shorter ช่วยเปิดประตู is grammatical and may itself be a request; leaving out หน่อย does not automatically turn it into a rude command. The second task asks for water with ขอน้ำหน่อย. ช่วยน้ำหน่อย does not express that intended request for water as an object; an action request instead specifies what the listener should do. The third task again asks for the displayed door phrase, with หน่อย after เปิดประตู. These selected contrasts do not establish a universal prohibition on ellipsis or alternative word orders in other contexts.
4. Context And Politeness
This construction can help frame an action as a request rather than a bare instruction. The relationship between speakers, the situation, the requested action, final particles, and delivery affect its interpretation. No frequency ranking or universal politeness scale follows from these four written examples. Written examples show the sentence structure; they do not determine how a speaker delivers a particular request.
Examples (4)
- ช่วยเปิดประตูหน่อยครับ
Please open the door.
Word by Word: Help + open + door + a little + [polite particle]
ช่วย introduces the action เปิดประตู, หน่อย follows that phrase, and ครับ is the final polite particle. The whole sentence is used as a request in this example.
- ช่วยพูดช้าๆหน่อยได้ไหมคะ
Could you please speak slowly?
Word by Word: Help + speak + slow-slow + a little + can + [question particle]
ได้ไหม makes this request a question about whether the listener can perform the requested action. คะ is the final question particle here. The additional words do not guarantee greater politeness in every context.
- ช่วยหยิบปากกาให้หน่อย
Please pick up the pen for me.
Word by Word: Help + pick up + pen + give + a little
ให้ indicates that the action is done for someone. The English 'for me' supplies the beneficiary understood in this example; no Thai first-person pronoun is written.
- ช่วยบอกเขาหน่อยนะ
Please tell him, okay?
Word by Word: Help + tell + him + a little + [softening particle]
นะ adds an appeal to the listener in this request. Its interpretation as friendly or pleading depends on the situation and delivery.
Common Mistakes
Say “Please Open the Door”
ช่วยปิดประตูหน่อยช่วยเปิดประตูหน่อยBoth requests are grammatical, but they ask for opposite actions. ช่วยปิดประตูหน่อย asks the listener to close the door. To request opening the door, use ช่วยเปิดประตูหน่อย with เปิด, “open”. The shorter ช่วยเปิดประตู can also be a request; this task distinguishes opening from closing and does not mark omission of หน่อย as a language error.
Using ช่วยน้ำหน่อย for the intended request for water.
ช่วยน้ำหน่อยขอน้ำหน่อยFor the intended request for water, use ขอน้ำหน่อย and compare ขอ (May I have). ช่วยน้ำหน่อย does not express that intended item request. To request an action, specify the action the listener should perform; this task is not a rule excluding every noun or person after ช่วย.
Putting หน่อย before ประตู in the door phrase requested here.
ช่วยเปิดหน่อยประตูช่วยเปิดประตูหน่อยFor the displayed door request, use ช่วยเปิดประตูหน่อย: หน่อย follows เปิดประตู as a phrase. ช่วยเปิดหน่อยประตู does not match the arrangement requested here. This task does not establish one compulsory position for หน่อย in every Thai construction.
