Subject + อยู่ + Location
In แมวอยู่ในกล่อง, อยู่ connects the cat to its location: inside the box. In other patterns, อยู่ can follow an action or state instead.

How It Works

A Location
แมวอยู่ในกล่อง says the cat is inside the box. ในกล่อง identifies the place. คุณอยู่กรุงเทพฯ ไหม? asks whether you are in or live in Bangkok, according to context; this exact question has no ที่ before the city name.

An Action In Progress
เขากำลังกินข้าวอยู่ presents eating as in progress. กำลัง comes before the action and อยู่ follows it. Here, the final อยู่ does not introduce a place. Read the separate In The Middle Of Doing entry for that pattern.

A Continuing State
เขายุ่งอยู่ presents being busy as a state holding at the relevant time. The sentence does not specify how long the state will last. อยู่ after a state is different from using อยู่ before a location; classifying a trait as permanent does not by itself decide whether a continuing-state phrase is possible.

Existence In A Place
มีเงินอยู่ในกระเป๋า says there is money in the bag. มี introduces the money’s existence, and อยู่ในกระเป๋า places it inside the bag. กระเป๋า can refer to a bag or pocket according to context; this translation uses bag.

Express Nationality
For the intended meaning I am Thai in this exercise, choose ผมเป็นคนไทย. เป็น connects ผม with คนไทย. The alternative ผมอยู่คนไทย does not express that intended nationality statement. Read the separate To Be Someone Or Something entry for its own patterns.

    This exact question places กรุงเทพฯ directly after อยู่, without ที่. The situation determines whether it asks about present location or residence. ไหม forms the yes-no question.

    กำลัง before กินข้าว and อยู่ after it frame the eating as ongoing. กินข้าว can be translated naturally as having a meal in this context.

  4. เขายุ่งอยู่

    He is busy right now.

    Here, อยู่ follows ยุ่ง and presents the busy state as holding at the relevant time. It does not specify that the state must be short-lived.

  5. มีเงินอยู่ในกระเป๋า

    There is money in the bag.

    มี introduces the existence of money, while อยู่ในกระเป๋า gives its location. The translation uses bag for กระเป๋า in this context.

Common Mistakes

  • Use เป็น For This Nationality Statement

    ผมอยู่คนไทย
    ผมเป็นคนไทย

    For the intended statement I am Thai, choose ผมเป็นคนไทย. In this phrase, เป็น links the speaker with the nationality category คนไทย. ผมอยู่คนไทย does not express that intended statement. This compares the two exact phrases, rather than claiming อยู่ is only a location word in all contexts.
