ทีเดียว
Quite and in One Go
ทีเดียว (thii-diao) emphasizes ดี in ดีทีเดียว. In the displayed ในทีเดียว phrases, it describes an action in one go. The complete construction determines the reading.
How It Works
1. Emphasis in the Whole Phrase
อาหารร้านนี้รสชาติดีทีเดียว describes the food at this restaurant as quite good. การสอบครั้งนี้ยากมากเลยทีเดียว emphasizes the difficulty of this exam with มาก and เลยทีเดียว. The NIU spoken-Thai lesson gives ดีทีเดียว with a quite-well reading and ถูกทีเดียว with exactly-right. These contexts do not establish one compulsory translation, greater intensity than มาก in every use, or a fixed polished tone. Compare เลย in its own consequence examples; the displayed emphatic phrase is not itself a therefore clause.
2. In One Go
เขาดื่มน้ำหมดขวดในทีเดียว describes drinking the bottle's water in one go. The whole phrase contains หมด and ในทีเดียว; completion does not come from every post-verbal ทีเดียว alone. เขากินยาหมดซองในทีเดียว likewise describes what a person did. Its medication sentence is a language example, not dosage or safety advice. Neither sentence establishes efficiency, lack of every interruption, or suitability of the action.
3. One Occasion
The dictionary also lists a single-time sense. Read ทีเดียว with the stated occasion, and compare ครั้งเดียว in its complete counting context. This does not make all emphatic and counting uses interchangeable.
4. Not Entirely Correct
เรื่องที่เขาพูดก็ไม่ถูกซะทีเดียว says what he said is not entirely or exactly correct. Here ไม่...ซะทีเดียว qualifies the correctness claim. It is not merely a low degree of correctness, and it does not determine a numeric percentage or prove that the statement must be partly true.
5. Read the Intended Contrast
The first exercise requests เขาเก่งทีเดียว with ทีเดียว following เก่ง in this emphatic phrase. The second requests walking up stairs one step at a time, เดินขึ้นบันไดทีละขั้น, with ทีละ. เดินขึ้นบันไดทีเดียว can instead describe the ascent in one go; it fails the requested step-by-step meaning, rather than being universally ungrammatical. Compare มาก ๆ and นะ in their own functions. These examples do not rank sophistication, formality or frequency, or make นะ synonymous with an intensifier.
Examples (5)
- อาหารร้านนี้รสชาติดีทีเดียว
The food at this restaurant is quite good.
Word by Word: food at this restaurant / taste / good / quite
ทีเดียว follows ดี in the full phrase รสชาติดีทีเดียว, emphasizing the favorable taste assessment without a fixed polished-register claim.
- เขาดื่มน้ำหมดขวดในทีเดียว
He drank the whole bottle of water in one go.
Word by Word: he / drink / water / all the bottle [contents] / in one go
หมดขวด and ในทีเดียว together describe drinking all the water in the bottle in one go; the reading belongs to the complete phrase.
- การสอบครั้งนี้ยากมากเลยทีเดียว
This exam was indeed very difficult.
Word by Word: exam / this occasion / difficult / very / [emphasis] / indeed
The retained มากเลยทีเดียว phrase emphasizes the exam difficulty here; it does not certify a formal-reporting requirement or one strength ranking in every context.
- เขากินยาหมดซองในทีเดียว
He took all the medicine in the packet at once.
Word by Word: he / take / medicine / all the packet [contents] / in one go
หมดซอง and ในทีเดียว describe the whole packet being taken in one go. This reports an action in a language example; it gives no recommended dose or safety certification.
- เรื่องที่เขาพูดก็ไม่ถูกซะทีเดียว
What he said isn't exactly correct.
Word by Word: matter / that / he / say / [ก็] / not / correct / entirely or exactly
ไม่ถูกซะทีเดียว qualifies the claim as not entirely or exactly correct. It does not specify a percentage or guarantee that part of the statement is true.
Common Mistakes
Moving ทีเดียว before เก่ง in the requested emphatic phrase.
เขาทีเดียวเก่งเขาเก่งทีเดียวFor the displayed meaning he is quite skilled, choose เขาเก่งทีเดียว. The retained เขาทีเดียวเก่ง does not reproduce that requested เก่งทีเดียว phrase. This pair is not a placement rule for every counting, emphatic or in-one-go construction.
Choosing in one go when the task asks for one step at a time.
เดินขึ้นบันไดทีเดียวเดินขึ้นบันไดทีละขั้นFor the requested step-by-step ascent, choose เดินขึ้นบันไดทีละขั้น. The retained เดินขึ้นบันไดทีเดียว instead permits an in-one-go reading. Compare ทีละ plus ขั้น for one step at a time; the alternative is a different intended manner, not a universally invalid sentence.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand ทีเดียว, you need to be comfortable with how Thai uses post-position markers to modify the intensity of adjectives (like 'very' or 'quite') and how it uses resultative markers after verbs to indicate the manner or completion of an action (like 'all at once').
- มากVery
ทีเดียว functions as an intensifier similar to มาก, so understanding how to modify adjectives with degree markers is essential.
Level 1 - Adjective + ขึ้นGetting More
Understanding how adjectives are modified by following particles helps in grasping the placement and function of ทีเดียว.
Level 2 - Verb + หมดAll Gone
ทีเดียว can indicate doing something 'in one go' or 'all at once', which is a resultative concept similar to other verb-completing particles like หมด.
