Verb + หมด

All Gone

Level 2

กินข้าวหมด = eat all the rice; ใช้เงินหมดแล้ว = spent all the money; ไปกันหมดแล้ว = everyone has gone. The full phrase determines what หมด includes.

How It Works

หมด: All of It or None Left
หมด (mòt) can describe an entire relevant amount or group, or a supply with nothing left. The whole construction determines what 'all' covers.

1. Using Up a Supply
In ขายหมดแล้ว ('Sold out already'), the stock has all been sold. In ใช้เงินหมดแล้ว ('Spent all the money already'), none of the relevant money remains. Compare กินข้าวหมด ('eat all the rice'), where หมด follows the rice being eaten.

2. Contents and Groups
In เขากินหมดจาน, the person ate all the food on the plate, not the plate itself. In ไปกันหมดแล้ว, everyone in the relevant group has gone. In ลืมหมดเลย, all the relevant information or things have been forgotten. These uses express total coverage; they do not always mean a physical resource disappeared.

3. Emphasis With เกลี้ยง
กินหมดเกลี้ยงเลย emphasizes eating everything, leaving none of the relevant food. In this expression, หมดเกลี้ยง means 'completely gone' or 'none left'.

4. Completion and Total Coverage
เสร็จ (sèt) emphasizes that a task or action is finished. หมด can emphasize that all the relevant amount has been dealt with. กินเสร็จ means finishing eating; it does not itself say all the food was eaten. กินหมด says all the relevant food was eaten. เสร็จ emphasizes that the task is finished. In ทำการบ้านหมดแล้ว, หมด can emphasize that all of the homework has been done. This does not mean that the homework physically vanished or was deleted. Choose the wording that matches the intended meaning.

5. A Main Predicate
In เงินหมด ('the money has run out'), หมด describes the state of the money without an earlier action verb. หมดแล้ว can mean 'That is all there is'. Learn the position and meaning from the whole construction, rather than requiring every หมด sentence to describe a resource reaching zero.

Examples (5)

  1. ขายหมดแล้ว

    Sold out already.

Word by Word: sell + all gone + already

In this shop context, ขายหมดแล้ว says that all the relevant stock has been sold.

  2. ใช้เงินหมดแล้ว

    Spent all the money already.

Word by Word: use + money + all gone + already

Here, 'mòt' shows the result of 'using' (chái) the money until none is left.

  3. เขากินหมดจาน

He ate all the food on the plate.

Word by Word: he + eat + all gone + plate

In เขากินหมดจาน, จาน identifies the plate-sized serving; the food on it was all eaten. The sentence does not mean that the plate itself was eaten.

  4. ไปกันหมดแล้ว

    They have all gone already.

Word by Word: go + together + all + already

In this context, 'mòt' indicates that every single person in the group has left.

  5. กินหมดเกลี้ยงเลย

    Ate it all up completely.

Word by Word: eat + all gone + clean/spotless + [emphasis]

In กินหมดเกลี้ยงเลย, หมดเกลี้ยง emphasizes that none of the relevant food is left.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting หมด before กินข้าว for the intended meaning 'eat all the rice'.

    หมดกินข้าว
    กินข้าวหมด

For the intended meaning 'eat all the rice', use กินข้าวหมด. หมดกินข้าว does not give that same verb + object + หมด construction. This comparison concerns the indicated eating construction; หมด also occurs as a main predicate in other constructions.
