เท่านั้น
Only — After the Phrase
เท่านั้น (thâo-nán) means 'only' or 'just.' It is placed after the phrase it limits. While common in writing and formal speech, it is more emphatic than the casual alternative เอง.
How It Works
In Thai, เท่านั้น is a versatile limiter. While it can be used in speech, it can sound more explicit or emphatic; casual speech also often uses แค่...เอง.
1. Position and Structure
Unlike English, เท่านั้น must follow the noun, number, or clause it modifies.
Structure: [Noun/Phrase] + [เท่านั้น]
Example: สองคนเท่านั้น (Only two people).
2. The 'Sandwich' Patterns
To add emphasis or specify a scope, เท่านั้น is frequently paired with a pre-positional word:
- แค่...เท่านั้น: Adds emphasis to 'just' (e.g., แค่ห้าบาทเท่านั้น - Just five Baht [and no more]).
- เพียง...เท่านั้น: The formal/written version (e.g., เพียงห้านาทีเท่านั้น - Only five minutes).
- เฉพาะ...เท่านั้น: Means 'specifically only' (e.g., เฉพาะพนักงานเท่านั้น - Staff only).
3. Not Only... But Also
To express 'not only... but also', Thai uses the frame ไม่เพียงแต่...เท่านั้น followed by แต่ยัง...อีกด้วย. For example: ไม่เพียงแต่สวยเท่านั้น แต่ยังฉลาดอีกด้วย (Not only beautiful, but also smart).
4. เท่านั้น vs. อย่างเดียว
While both can translate to 'only', เท่านั้น sets a limit on the relevant phrase (no more or nothing else, depending on context). The related expression อย่างเดียว often means 'the only thing' or 'nothing else'. Their meanings can overlap; this is not a rigid items-versus-amounts split. For example, 'eating only rice' as a single item is กินข้าวอย่างเดียว, while 'only 100 Baht' as a limit is หนึ่งร้อยบาทเท่านั้น.
5. Scope of Limitation
เท่านั้น can limit different parts of a sentence:
- After a noun: Limits the noun in its role as subject, object, or another participant (e.g., 'Only I know').
- After a quantity: Limits the amount (e.g., 'Only 100 Baht').
- At the end of a clause: Limits the entire action (e.g., 'I just want to help').
Examples (6)
- มีเวลาห้านาทีเท่านั้น
There are only five minutes.
Word by Word: have time five minute only
Here, เท่านั้น follows the time duration to show a strict limit.
- ฉันเชื่อใจแม่ของฉันเท่านั้น
I trust only my mother.
Word by Word: I trust mother of me only
By placing เท่านั้น after 'my mother,' the speaker excludes everyone else from their trust.
- ราคาหนึ่งร้อยบาทเท่านั้น
The price is only 100 Baht.
Word by Word: price one hundred Baht only
Commonly used in commerce to emphasize a low or fixed price.
- ไม่เพียงแต่เขาเท่านั้น แต่ยังเพื่อนของเขาอีกด้วย
Not only him, but also his friend.
Word by Word: not only he only but also friend of he too
This demonstrates the 'Not only... but also' structure using ไม่เพียงแต่...เท่านั้น.
- เขากินข้าวอย่างเดียว
He eats solely rice (nothing else).
Word by Word: he eat rice solely
This uses อย่างเดียว to present rice as the only food in this example. เท่านั้น can also exclude other foods when the context gives it that scope. The words overlap; the intended limit comes from the whole sentence.
- มีเพียงเขาเท่านั้นที่รู้ความจริง
Only he knows the truth.
Word by Word: have only him only who know truth
A formal sentence using เพียง...เท่านั้น to restrict the knowledge to one person.
Common Mistakes
Placing เท่านั้น Before The Quantity It Limits.
เท่านั้นสองคนสองคนเท่านั้นIn สองคนเท่านั้น, เท่านั้น follows the whole quantity phrase สองคน, ‘two people’. เท่านั้นสองคน does not give the intended ‘only two people’ phrase. This placement rule is for เท่านั้น; แค่ can come before the quantity.
Using เท่านั้น for 'just' in terms of time (recently).
ฉันมาเท่านั้นฉันเพิ่งมาเท่านั้น limits a quantity or scope. The first sentence can mean 'I only came' or 'I came and did nothing more'; it does not express the intended meaning 'I arrived just now'. For that recent-time meaning, use เพิ่ง. The first sentence is a meaning mismatch for this task, not ungrammatical Thai.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand เท่านั้น, you need to be comfortable with Thai word order, specifically how modifiers and particles are placed at the end of the phrases they modify. It is most commonly used after nouns, numbers, or classifiers to specify 'only' that amount or item.
Related Patterns
- เพียงReading เพียง in Complete Phrases
The formal version of 'only' that precedes the phrase; often used together with เท่านั้น in writing.
Level 3 - เองOneself
A particle used in casual speech to minimize an amount ('just/only'), often replacing the more formal เท่านั้น.
Level 2 - โดยเฉพาะEspecially
Means 'especially', which highlights something without excluding everything else. This differs from เท่านั้น in the limiting pattern เฉพาะ...เท่านั้น, which means 'only'. The linked expression includes an additional word and should not be treated as that limiting expression.
Level 3 - เพิ่งRecent Actions and Not Yet
Used to express 'just' in terms of time (recent actions), whereas เท่านั้น is for quantity or limitation.
Level 2 - Counting A Noun
เท่านั้น usually follows this specific counting structure when limiting quantities.
