เลย (ผลที่ตามมา)
So Then
เลย (loei) can mean 'so' or 'therefore'. It introduces a result whose cause is stated or already clear from the conversation.
How It Works
In Thai, when you want to express that one thing happened as a consequence of another, you use เลย.
1. Sentence Position
When the result clause states its subject, เลย normally follows that subject and comes before the verb or the negative word ไม่.
• Structure: [Cause] + (Subject) + เลย + [Verb/Result]
The subject may be left out when it is clear. The cause may also have been stated in an earlier sentence, so a following result can begin with เลย.
2. Spoken vs. Formal
เลย is common in conversation. Formal writing often uses จึง or ดังนั้น instead. In daily life, however, เลย is the standard choice.
3. The "gôr loei" Variant
You will very often hear ก็เลย (gôr loei). The addition of ก็ acts as a bridge, making the transition between the cause and the result smoother, similar to saying "and so..." or "consequently."
Examples (4)
- ฝนตกเลยไม่ไป
It rained, so [I] didn't go.
Word by Word: rain fall so not go
Here, 'loei' marks the direct result of the rain. Notice it comes before the negative 'mâi'.
- หิวมากก็เลยกินเยอะ
[I] was very hungry, so [I] ate a lot.
Word by Word: hungry very and-so eat a-lot
This uses the common 'gôr loei' combination to show a natural reaction to being hungry.
- รถติดผมเลยมาสาย
The traffic was heavy, so I arrived late.
Word by Word: car stuck I so come late
Notice the word order: the subject 'phǒm' (I) comes before 'loei', which then comes before the verb 'maa' (come).
- ไม่มีเงินเลยไม่ซื้อ
[I] don't have money, so [I] didn't buy [it].
Word by Word: not have money so not buy
The first part is the cause, and 'loei' introduces the logical result.
Common Mistakes
Putting the stated subject after the result marker in this basic frame.
เลยผมไปผมเลยไปIn this basic result clause, put the stated subject ผม before เลย. This does not mean that every sentence beginning with เลย is wrong: Thai can leave out a subject that is already clear.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'เลย' as a marker of consequence, you need to be comfortable with basic Thai sentence structure and how clauses are linked. It is helpful to understand other logical connectors like 'ก็' (then) and 'เพราะ' (because) to see how 'เลย' fits into the flow of expressing cause and effect.
