ครั้ง
Counting Occasions
The examples count three trips and several attempts, identify a first occasion, and refer to this occasion with ครั้งนี้. Interpret the full phrase rather than one clock-time or duration gloss.
How It Works
1. Counting Occurrences
ฉันเคยไปเชียงใหม่สามครั้งแล้ว contains สามครั้ง after the Chiang Mai trip phrase. เขาพยายามหลายครั้งแต่ยังไม่สำเร็จ contains หลายครั้ง after the trying verb. Read ครั้ง as counted occasions in these clauses, not as hours of duration or a clock reading. This does not make ครั้ง the sole classifier for every event or establish a mandatory word order in every construction.
2. Referring to an Occasion
ครั้งนี้ opens the last example with “this time.” ครั้งแรก names the first occasion in the durian example. That example contains แรก, not an overt ที่ + number construction; the later ที่ introduces the eating clause. Compare ครั้งที่สอง as a separate second-occasion pattern without treating every first-occasion expression as identical in form.
3. Experience, Attempts, and Intention
The Chiang Mai example combines เคย and แล้ว with a three-occasion count. The attempts example says success has not yet occurred; it does not guarantee later success. ครั้งนี้ฉันจะตั้งใจเรียน states the speaker’s intention to study attentively on this occasion, not proof that the plan will succeed. NIU’s selected ครั้ง entry also gives a several-visits example and a how-many-times question, while ครั้งนี้ has a full contrast between general agreement and disagreement on this occasion.
4. The Requested Exercises
Both exercises request ไปสามครั้ง for “go three times.” ไปสามเวลา does not reproduce that occurrence-count phrase; this task is not a rule that เวลา means only clock time. สามครั้งไป places the count before ไป and does not reproduce the requested sequence. Other fronted or separated constructions need their own contexts, rather than a universal ban.
5. Related Patterns
Compare counting objects, repeated actions with อีกครั้ง, recurring clauses with ทุกครั้งที่, and increments with ทีละ in their own complete examples. None of these comparisons establishes a fixed register ranking among ครั้ง, ที, and หน, a universal classifier requirement after หลาย, or a verified claim that a described event happens without fail.
Examples (4)
- ฉันเคยไปเชียงใหม่สามครั้งแล้ว
I have been to Chiang Mai three times already.
Word by Word: I | เคย [past experience] | go | Chiang Mai | three | occasions | แล้ว [already here]
สามครั้ง counts trips after the trip phrase here. Compare number and classifier constructions without applying an all-classifier or all-word-order rule.
- นี่เป็นครั้งแรกที่ผมกินทุเรียน
This is the first time I have eaten durian.
Word by Word: this | be | occasion | first | ที่ [clause linker here] | I | eat | durian
ครั้งแรก identifies the first occasion, and ที่ links the following eating clause. Compare ordinal-number constructions separately: the native contains แรก rather than an overt ที่ followed by a number.
- เขาพยายามหลายครั้งแต่ยังไม่สำเร็จ
He has tried several times but has not yet succeeded.
Word by Word: he | try | several | occasions | but | still | not | succeed
หลาย modifies ครั้ง in this attempt count. ยังไม่สำเร็จ states not-yet success without promising eventual success or verifying an actual person’s outcome.
- ครั้งนี้ฉันจะตั้งใจเรียน
This time I intend to study attentively.
Word by Word: occasion | this | I | จะ [prospective here] | ตั้งใจ [intend/be attentive] | study
ครั้งนี้ sets this occasion as the topic with นี้. จะตั้งใจเรียน supplies the speaker’s plan to study attentively, not a guaranteed future achievement.
Common Mistakes
Not reproducing the requested three-occasion phrase with ครั้ง.
ไปสามเวลาไปสามครั้งThe task requests ไปสามครั้ง for “go three times.” ไปสามเวลา does not reproduce that occurrence-count construction. The contrast does not define every possible เวลา phrase or make ครั้ง the only event classifier.
Not reproducing the requested ไป + สามครั้ง sequence.
สามครั้งไปไปสามครั้งThe task requests ไปสามครั้ง, with the count following ไป. สามครั้งไป puts it before ไป and does not reproduce this sequence; other fronted or separated phrases need their own context, not a universal word-order ban.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use ครั้ง (the classifier for 'times' or 'occasions'), you first need to understand the basic Thai counting structure where the number comes before the classifier. You also need to be familiar with Thai numerals to express the quantity of occurrences.
Related Patterns
- ที่ + NumberOrdinal Numbers
Compare ครั้งที่สอง separately from the native ครั้งแรก; the latter uses แรก and a later clause-linking ที่.
Level 2 - อีกครั้งOne More Time
Read อีกครั้ง in complete repeated-action contexts without a frequency or register ranking.
Level 2 - ทุกครั้งที่Every Time That
Compare full ทุกครั้งที่ clauses describing recurring relationships; their claims are not independently verified by the connector.
Level 4 - หลายSeveral
หลายครั้ง occurs in the attempt example; this does not establish a classifier requirement for every หลาย phrase.
Level 2 - ทีละOne at a Time
Compare ทีละ increments in their own full phrases, separately from the displayed total occurrence counts.
