นอกจาก
Besides and Except
The examples use นอกจาก to add information, exclude an item, or state a condition. The surrounding statement distinguishes these readings.
How It Works
Addition
นอกจากส้มแล้ว เขาก็ยังชอบกินแตงโมอีกด้วย says that he likes watermelon in addition to oranges. In this clause, แล้ว closes the first item; it does not assert that liking oranges has already finished. The displayed ก็, ยัง, อีก, and ด้วย work together to express the additional point. Their functional gloss is not a claim of temporal sequence, continued duration, or repeated eating. The language example uses นอกจากจะพูดไทยได้แล้ว to introduce one ability before adding another; จะ here is part of the displayed addition pattern, not a future promise.
Exception
ไม่มีใครไปเที่ยว นอกจากสมชาย excludes Somchai from the statement that no one went on the outing. ฉันชอบผลไม้ทุกอย่าง นอกจากทุเรียน excludes durian from the stated preference for all kinds of fruit. The exercise asks for that explicit all-kinds scope, so retain ทุกอย่าง for this task. It does not establish that every positive exception statement needs a quantifier. Compare the excluding meaning taught by ยกเว้น in its own examples, without assuming exact interchangeability in every context.
Aside From This Matter
นอกจากเรื่องนี้ มีคำถามอื่นไหม asks about other questions aside from this matter. The English and Indonesian translations supply [you] from the selected conversation; no subject pronoun is written in the Thai clause.
Condition
ฉันจะไม่ไป นอกจากว่าคุณจะไปด้วย means that I will not go unless you go too. It states a condition, not a guarantee that I will go when the condition is met. The dictionary witness ดิฉันจะไม่เต้นรำ นอกจากคุณจะเต้นกับดิฉัน also expresses an unless-condition without ว่า; this rules out making ว่า compulsory from the displayed example.
Related Transition
นอกจากนั้น can introduce an additional point, as in the dictionary example นอกจากนั้น เขายังเป็นเพื่อนผมอีกด้วย, “Besides that, he is also my friend.” Compare นอกจากนี้ in its linked entry with its own topic context; these two forms do not establish a strict external-versus-previous-topic rule.
Examples (6)
- นอกจากส้มแล้ว เขาก็ยังชอบกินแตงโมอีกด้วย
Besides oranges, he also likes to eat watermelon.
Word by Word: besides | oranges | first-item boundary | he | addition marker | additionally | like | eat | watermelon | additionally | too
The complete clause adds watermelon to oranges. แล้ว and ก็ยัง…อีกด้วย are represented functionally; this example does not prove future, continued-duration, or repeated-eating readings.
- ไม่มีใครไปเที่ยว นอกจากสมชาย
No one went on an outing except Somchai.
Word by Word: not exist | anyone | go on an outing | except | Somchai
Somchai is the exception to the statement that no one went. Past tense is selected for this translation; the Thai clause alone does not mark past time.
- นอกจากจะพูดไทยได้แล้ว เขาก็ยังพูดภาษาจีนได้อีกด้วย
Not only can he speak Thai, but he can also speak Chinese.
Word by Word: besides | addition-pattern marker | speak | Thai | can | first-ability boundary | he | addition marker | additionally | speak | Chinese language | can | additionally | too
The full pattern adds a second ability. Each ได้ expresses ability here; จะ does not turn the first ability into a future promise. ภาษาจีน says Chinese without identifying a particular Chinese variety.
- ฉันชอบผลไม้ทุกอย่าง นอกจากทุเรียน
I like every kind of fruit except durian.
Word by Word: I | like | fruit | every kind | except | durian
ทุกอย่าง supplies the all-kinds scope in this displayed preference; durian is the stated exception. This is a reading of this full clause, not a requirement for every positive exception statement.
- นอกจากเรื่องนี้ มีคำถามอื่นไหม
Aside from this matter, do [you] have other questions?
Word by Word: aside from | matter | this | have | question | other | question particle
นอกจากเรื่องนี้ introduces the matter set aside; มีคำถามอื่นไหม asks about other questions. [You] is inferred from the selected conversation, not a written Thai pronoun.
- ฉันจะไม่ไป นอกจากว่าคุณจะไปด้วย
I won't go unless you go too.
Word by Word: I | future marker | not | go | unless | you | prospective marker | go | too
นอกจากว่า introduces the condition in this example. It does not guarantee that the speaker will go if the other person goes, or establish that ว่า is required in every unless-condition.
Common Mistakes
Omitting ทุกอย่าง in the task asking for “every kind of fruit except durian.”
ฉันชอบผลไม้ นอกจากทุเรียนฉันชอบผลไม้ทุกอย่าง นอกจากทุเรียนFor this task, retain ทุกอย่าง to state the requested all-kinds scope explicitly. ฉันชอบผลไม้ นอกจากทุเรียน can receive an exception reading in a suitable context, but it does not explicitly include the all-kinds wording requested here. The retained pair compares these two exact task responses, not all positive exception sentences.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'นอกจาก' (besides/except), you should first be familiar with the preposition 'จาก' (from), as the pattern literally translates to 'outside from'. Additionally, because this pattern is often used to add information ('besides this, there is also...') or set conditions, knowing how to use 'แล้ว' to close a phrase and 'อีก' to indicate addition will help you form natural sentences.
- จากFrom
The word 'นอกจาก' is a compound starting with 'นอก' (outside) and 'จาก' (from). Understanding 'จาก' as a marker of origin or separation is fundamental to the logic of 'besides' or 'except'.
Level 1 - แล้วAlready Done
The pattern 'นอกจาก' is frequently paired with 'แล้ว' (often in the form 'นอกจาก... แล้ว') to frame the item being set aside before introducing additional information.
Level 1 - อีกMore and Again
When 'นอกจาก' is used to mean 'besides' (in addition to), it is commonly used in conjunction with 'อีก' (more/again) to indicate that there is something else beyond the first item mentioned.

Related Patterns
- ยกเว้นExceptions with ยกเว้น
Compare the excluding reading of นอกจาก in the fruit and Somchai examples with ยกเว้น in its linked examples; no all-context synonym rule follows.
Level 3 - ยัง (ยังคง)Still
ยัง appears in the displayed additional watermelon and language clauses; read its contribution in the full clause rather than assuming duration from its linked title.
Level 2 - นอกจากนี้Moreover
Compare นอกจากนี้ as a transition introducing an additional point in its own linked context.
Level 4 - แต่But
Compare แต่ linking contrasting statements with the addition, exception, and condition shown here; do not derive a fixed “except but” formula.
