แต่

But

Level 1

แต่ (dtàe) connects contrasting descriptions or clauses with 'but'. In เขากินแต่ผัก it limits the food to vegetables. In เขากลับบ้านแต่เช้า, the time expression means early in the morning.

How It Works

1. Connecting A Contrast
แต่ (dtàe) can connect descriptions or clauses with 'but'. อร่อยแต่แพง contrasts two descriptions: delicious, but expensive. ผมอยากไปแต่ไม่มีเงิน contrasts wanting to go with not having money. These are contrasting ideas, rather than a general comparison such as 'taller than'.

2. Restricting What Is Included
In เขากินแต่ผัก, แต่ follows กิน and restricts the food to vegetables: 'He eats only vegetables'. It does not say that eating is the only activity he does. In constructions with มีแต่, read what follows as the thing or things being included, with alternatives excluded in that context. The extent of the restriction comes from the whole sentence.

3. Reading The Whole Time Expression
แต่ also occurs in expressions with a 'from' or 'since' meaning. Compare their complete wording with constructions using ตั้งแต่. Do not automatically translate every time expression with แต่ as 'since'. In the preserved example เขากลับบ้านแต่เช้า, แต่เช้า means early in the morning: 'He went home early in the morning'. It places the home-going action early; it does not say that he kept going home from that time onward. The English past-time reading comes from context, rather than a past-tense ending on the Thai verb.

4. Contrasting With แต่ว่า
แต่ว่า (dtàe-wâa) also connects a contrast, as in อาหารเผ็ดแต่ว่าอร่อยมาก: the food is spicy, but very delicious. Compare แต่ and แต่ว่า in their complete sentences. Adding ว่า does not provide a fixed scale of emphasis for every use.

5. The Two Practice Contrasts
The first task intends the small amount 'only two baht', so it changes มีแต่สองบาท to มีแค่สองบาท. That task favors the quantity-limiting reading of แค่; it does not establish that every sequence of มีแต่ followed by a number is impossible in every context. The second task compares แต (Mid tone) with แต่ (Low tone). In standard written tone rules, ต is a middle-class consonant and the live syllable with ่ has a low tone. Keep the marked spelling แต่ for this word; removing the mark is not a rule that the result must mean 'horn'.

Examples (5)

  1. อร่อยแต่แพง

    Delicious but expensive.

Word by Word: delicious but expensive

อร่อย and แพง are contrasting descriptions. แต่ connects them with 'but'; the object being described is supplied by context.

  2. ผมอยากไปแต่ไม่มีเงิน

I want to go, but I don't have money.

Word by Word: I want go but not have money

ผม states the speaker, and แต่ connects wanting to go with the contrasting clause ไม่มีเงิน, not having money.

  3. เขากินแต่ผัก

    He eats only vegetables.

Word by Word: he eat but vegetable

Here แต่ follows กิน and limits the food to vegetables. It does not mean that the person does no activity other than eating.

  4. เขากลับบ้านแต่เช้า

He went home early in the morning.

Word by Word: he return home early in the morning

In this sentence, แต่เช้า places the home-going action early in the morning. Read the whole expression rather than translating แต่ separately as 'since'. The English example uses a past-time reading supplied by context.

  5. อาหารเผ็ดแต่ว่าอร่อยมาก

The food is spicy, but it's very delicious.

Word by Word: food spicy but-that delicious very

แต่ว่า connects the spicy-food description with the contrasting description อร่อยมาก, very delicious. This example does not establish that แต่ว่า always adds more emphasis than แต่.

Common Mistakes

  • Choosing a limiter for the intended small amount 'only two baht'.

    มีแต่สองบาท
    มีแค่สองบาท

For the intended amount 'only two baht', use มีแค่สองบาท. แค่ limits the amount in this task. มีแต่สองบาท can invite a different restriction on what is available, so this pair practices the intended amount rather than banning every use of แต่ with a number.

  • Keeping the tone mark in the written word แต่.

    แต (Mid tone)
    แต่ (Low tone)

The pair compares แต (Mid tone) with แต่ (Low tone). ต is a middle-class consonant; in this live syllable, adding ่ gives the low tone. Use the marked spelling แต่ for the word in this lesson. The unmarked form is not automatically a word meaning 'horn'.
