Parentheticals and Clitic Placement
Serbian enclitics (short auxiliary verbs, reflexive 'се', and weak pronoun forms) obey the second-position rule within an intonational phrase, not by mechanical word count. Because parentheticals set off by commas create independent prosodic islands, an enclitic can NEVER appear immediately after a comma or pause. Clitics must either attach to a host before the parenthetical begins, or wait and attach in second position within the post-parenthetical phrase.
How It Works
In Serbian, enclitics include the question particle ли, auxiliary verbs (сам, си, је, смо, сте, су; ћу, ћеш, ће, ћемо, ћете, ће; бих, би [2/3. л. јд. и 3. л. мн.], бисмо, бисте), the reflexive pronominal clitic се, and unstressed pronominal objects in the dative (ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им), genitive, and accusative (ме, те, га, је/ју, нас, вас, их, where ју is also obligatory next to auxiliary је).
While introductory grammars state that clitics occupy 'second position' (after the first phrase), advanced syntax reveals that this domain is the intonational phrase (ι-phrase) rather than a purely mechanical string of words. Parenthetical insertions (уметнуте речи и реченице) introduce prosodic boundaries (marked orthographically by commas, dashes, or parentheses) that interrupt the matrix clause.
The Boundary Constraint (*#_CL):
Serbian enclitics are phonologically dependent: they lean leftward onto an accented host word inside the same prosodic domain. They cannot lean across an intonational pause or comma boundary. Therefore, placing an enclitic directly after a closing comma is strictly prohibited in standard literary Serbian (*Они, наравно, су дошли).
Standard Strategies:
- Pre-parenthetical attachment (most common and natural): The clitic cluster encliticizes immediately to the clause-initial element before the parenthetical begins:
Они су, наравно, дошли на време.
Петар му је, без сумње, све објаснио. - Initial placement of the parenthetical: Moving the parenthetical outside the clause domain avoids interrupting clitic attachment altogether:
Наравно, они су дошли на време. - Delayed placement (одложено смештање): If the parenthetical is inserted directly between the initial constituent and the verb, the clitic cannot follow the comma; it must attach to the first stressed element in the subsequent prosodic unit:
Они, наравно, дошли су на време.
Note: In standard Serbian prose, this delayed inversion of participle and auxiliary is stylistically marked; pre-parenthetical host attachment or clause-initial parentheticals are strongly preferred.
Parenthetical Clauses with Internal Clitics:
When a parenthetical is an entire clause containing its own enclitics (e.g., као што сам вам рекао), those clitics satisfy their requirements strictly within the parenthetical's own boundaries. They never interact with or satisfy the clitic host requirements of the host clause.
Examples (4)
- Тај човек, по мом мишљењу, поступио је сасвим исправно.
That man, in my opinion, acted completely correctly.
Word by Word: That man, by my opinion, acted is completely correctly.
Demonstrates delayed placement. The auxiliary clitic 'је' cannot attach directly after the comma ('мишљењу, је поступио'); it must attach to the participle 'поступио' inside the following intonational phrase.
- Они су, на велику жалост свих присутних, морали да прекину концерт.
They, to the great regret of everyone present, had to interrupt the concert.
Word by Word: They are, on great regret of-all present, had that interrupt concert.
Demonstrates pre-parenthetical placement. The auxiliary clitic 'су' attaches directly to the initial subject pronoun 'Они' before the parenthetical break opens.
- Милош, као што сам вам већ рекао, стигао је синоћ.
Miloš, as I already told you, arrived last night.
Word by Word: Miloš, as that am to-you already told, arrived is last-night.
The clitics 'сам вам' belong strictly inside the parenthetical clause. The main clause auxiliary 'је' appears after the post-comma participle 'стигао'.
- Ова одлука је, без икакве сумње, променила ток догађаја.
This decision, without any doubt, changed the course of events.
Word by Word: This decision is, without any doubt, changed course of-events.
The copula/auxiliary 'је' takes the noun phrase 'Ова одлука' as its host before the inserted prepositional phrase 'без икакве сумње'.
Common Mistakes
Placing an enclitic directly after a comma following a parenthetical
Ова књига, као што знате, је веома ретка.Ова књига, као што знате, веома је ретка.Learners often treat parentheticals as transparent, placing 'је' immediately after the comma. In standard Serbian, enclitics cannot follow a prosodic boundary/comma. The clitic must either attach before the break ('Ова књига је, као што знате...') or after the first stressed element in the next phrase ('...веома је ретка').
Splitting a clitic cluster across parenthetical boundaries
Они су, наравно, га видели јуче.Они су га, наравно, видели јуче.Clitic clusters (auxiliary + object pronouns) must stay together in standard syntax. You cannot leave the auxiliary before the parenthetical and place the accusative pronoun 'га' isolated after the comma without an accented host.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn clitic placement around parenthetical expressions and prosodic breaks, learners must first understand baseline clitic placement (the second-position rule after the first syntactic constituent) as well as the behavior of parenthetical and connective markers.
- Clitics After the First Constituent
Understanding regular second-position clitic placement after a phrase/constituent is essential before learning how parentheticals and prosodic breaks alter or redefine that second position.
