јер / зато што
Giving a Reason
Use јер or зато што to give a reason or explain a cause (equivalent to English 'because'). While both explain reasons, зато што is flexible in sentence position and answers questions directly, whereas јер must follow the main clause in standard Serbian.
How It Works
Giving reasons in Serbian revolves around two primary causal conjunctions (узрочни везници): јер and зато што.
1. Syntactic Rules and Word Order
Inside the reason clause, normal word order applies, but second-position clitics (short pronouns and auxiliary verbs) immediately attach right behind the conjunction unit:
• ...јер сам га видео. (Auxiliary сам follows јер).
• ...зато што је хладно. (Enclitic attaches to the entire two-word conjunction зато што).
2. Position Constraints (The 'Јер' Rule)
A cardinal rule taught in Serbian grammar is: Реченица не почиње са 'јер' ('A sentence does not start with јер'). A clause introduced by јер must be post-posed, following the main result clause:
• Correct: Не идем у биоскоп јер немам новца.
• Incorrect: *Јер немам новца, не идем у биоскоп.
When the causal clause precedes the main clause, standard Serbian typically uses пошто or будући да, though зато што is also possible (especially when emphasizing or contrasting the reason):
• Correct: Пошто немам новца, не идем у биоскоп.
• Correct: Зато што немам новца, не идем у биоскоп.
3. Avoiding Pleonastic '*Зато јер'
A frequent error among learners and colloquial speakers is merging the two conjunctions into *зато јер. Standard Serbian strictly forbids this combination. Use either јер or зато што, never both together:
• Correct: Учим јер имам тест.
• Correct: Учим зато што имам тест.
• Incorrect: *Учим зато јер имам тест.
4. Answering 'Зашто?'
In standard dialogue, standalone answers to questions headed by Зашто? (Why?) use зато што:
• — Зашто не спаваш?
— Зато што читам књигу.
(Although colloquial speech often shortcuts to Јер... here, standard written grammar considers starting an answer with јер non-standard).
5. Modifiers and Emphasis
When modifying the reason with focal particles such as само (only) or управо (precisely), you must use зато што:
• Радим ово само зато што те волим. (Never: *само јер...).
6. Distinct Words to Keep Separate
• зато (alone): Means 'therefore' or 'that is why' and introduces a consequence, not a cause: Болестан сам, зато остајем код куће.
• је л’: Short for је ли, a question particle ('is it?'). Do not confuse its phonetic similarity with јер.
Examples (4)
- Не могу да изађем вечерас јер морам да учим за испит.
I cannot go out tonight because I have to study for an exam.
Word by Word: Not I-can to I-go-out tonight because I-must to I-study for exam.
Canonical usage of 'јер' following the main clause to provide an explanation.
- — Зашто ниси дошао јуче? — Зато што сам био болестан.
— Why didn't you come yesterday? — Because I was sick.
Word by Word: — Why not-you-were come yesterday? — Because that I-was been sick.
Direct standalone answers to 'Зашто?' require 'зато што' in standard Serbian.
- Зато што је почео јак пљусак, утакмица је одложена.
Because a heavy downpour started, the match was postponed.
Word by Word: Because that is started heavy downpour, match is postponed.
Demonstrates an inverted sentence where the reason comes first; 'зато што' allows this position, but 'јер' cannot.
- Помажем ти само зато што си ми добар пријатељ.
I am helping you only because you are a good friend of mine.
Word by Word: I-help you only because that you-are to-me good friend.
Focal particles like 'само' (only) pair strictly with 'зато што', never with 'јер'.
Common Mistakes
Starting a complex sentence with 'јер'
Јер сам био уморан, отишао сам раније да спавам.Пошто сам био уморан, отишао сам раније да спавам.In standard Serbian, 'јер' cannot introduce a preposed clause placed before the main clause. In sentence-initial position, standard Serbian typically uses 'пошто' or 'будући да' (or 'зато што' when emphasizing the reason).
Combining both conjunctions into the pleonastic error '*зато јер'
Остао сам код куће зато јер сам болестан.Остао сам код куће зато што сам болестан.Never blend the two causal conjunctions into '*зато јер'. Standard Serbian requires choosing either 'јер' or 'зато што' independently.
Dropping 'што' and using 'зато' alone to express 'because'
Не идем на посао зато сам болестан.Не идем на посао зато што сам болестан.'Зато' by itself means 'therefore' or 'that is why' and introduces a consequence. To introduce a cause, you must include 'што' (зато што) or use 'јер'.
How It Connects
Learn This First
Using 'јер' and 'зато што' requires connecting two full clauses to state a cause or reason. Learners need to be comfortable forming basic clauses with present tense verbs and familiar with simple clause coordination.
