Ordering Object Clitics
When combining short (enclitic) object pronouns in Serbian, the dative pronoun always comes before the accusative pronoun: Dative + Accusative (e.g., ми га, ти је).
How It Works
In Serbian, clitic pronouns (енклитике / занагласнице) lack independent lexical stress. They lean onto an accented host word in clause-second position (Wackernagel's position) to form a unified prosodic unit.
While word order of full noun phrases or stressed pronouns in Serbian is pragmatically flexible, the internal ordering of the clitic cluster is grammatically rigid:
- Dative Clitics: ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им
- Accusative Clitics: ме, те, га, је / ју, нас, вас, их
Key Rules for the Object Sequence:
1. Strict Precedence: The dative clitic always precedes the accusative clitic: On mi ga daje (He gives it to me). Never say *On ga mi daje.
2. Position Relative to Auxiliaries: Most verbal auxiliaries (сам, си, смо, сте, су; ћу, ћеш...) stand before the pronominal cluster (e.g., Они су ми га дали). However, the 3rd person singular auxiliary clitic је is a major exception—it always sits at the very end of the cluster (e.g., Он ми га је дао).
3. Preventing Repetition: When the 3rd person singular feminine accusative је occurs immediately before the auxiliary је, it changes to ју (ју уместо је уз помоћно је): Он му ју је вратио.
Examples (5)
- Он ми га је јуче донео.
He brought it to me yesterday.
Word by Word: He to-me it has yesterday brought.
The short dative pronoun 'ми' precedes the short accusative pronoun 'га'. Note that the auxiliary 'је' follows both object clitics.
- Ако ти се допада та књига, купићу ти је.
If you like that book, I will buy it for you.
Word by Word: If to-you itself pleases that book, I-will-buy to-you it.
In the second clause, 'ти' (dative recipient) directly precedes 'је' (accusative feminine object referring to 'књига').
- Дај ми га одмах!
Give it to me right away!
Word by Word: Give to-me it immediately!
Attached to the imperative verb 'дај', the dative clitic 'ми' strictly precedes the accusative clitic 'га'.
- Професор им их је показао на часу.
The professor showed them to them in class.
Word by Word: Professor to-them them has shown in class.
'Им' (dative plural: to them) precedes 'их' (accusative plural: them), followed by the auxiliary 'је'.
- Позајмио сам му оловку, али он ми ју је већ вратио.
I lent him a pencil, but he already returned it to me.
Word by Word: Lent am to-him pencil, but he to-me it has already returned.
Dative 'ми' precedes accusative 'ју' (variant of 'је' used before the auxiliary 'је').
Common Mistakes
Placing the accusative direct object before the dative indirect object.
Дај га ми одмах!Дај ми га одмах!English speakers often calque 'Give it to me' (Direct Object + Indirect Object). In Serbian clitic clusters, dative must always precede accusative.
Placing the auxiliary 'је' ahead of the pronominal clitics.
Он је ми га послао.Он ми га је послао.Unlike other past tense auxiliaries (сам, си, смо...), the 3rd person singular auxiliary 'је' must stand at the very end of the clitic group, after both dative and accusative pronouns.
Starting a sentence with clitic pronouns.
Ми га даје сваки дан.Он ми га даје сваки дан.Enclitics cannot stand sentence-initially. They must attach to a preceding stressed host word (such as the subject pronoun 'Он' or the verb 'Даје ми га').
