Genitive With Prepositions
The genitive is the case governed by the greatest number of prepositions in Serbian. Five essential everyday prepositions unconditionally demand the genitive case: из (out of/from inside), од (from/away from), до (to/until/next to), без (without), and код (at/by/at someone's place). Unlike dual-case prepositions (like у or на), these prepositions take the genitive whether you describe motion or a static position.
How It Works
To strengthen your grasp of the Serbian prepositional system, it is vital to categorize prepositions by case government.
1. Interior Exit vs. Starting Point: из vs. од (and с / са)
Serbian carefully distinguishes the relationship between starting point, surfaces, and enclosure:
- из corresponds to the entire у-spatial domain, marking departure or origin from within an enclosed space, building, room, town, or country. It answers both dynamic entry (у + accusative: у школу → из школе) and static location (у + locative: у школи сам → враћам се из школе). See also из Србије (from Serbia).
- с / са (+ genitive) functions as the natural counterpart to the на-domain (на + accusative / locative). It denotes movement down from a surface or departure from open places, events, and work: узети књигу са стола (to take a book off the table), долазим са посла (I am coming from work), са станице (from the station).
- од denotes separation from a reference point, distance, temporal or spatial starting points, sources, or materials: од куће (away from the house), од петка (since/from Friday), поклон од брата (a gift from my brother), сто од дрвета (a wooden table). It marks distance from an outer point, not an exit from inside a space.
2. Boundary and Proximity: до
The preposition до marks reaching an outer perimeter, deadline, or physical limit without passing inside:
- Temporal deadline: до сутра (until tomorrow).
- Spatial limit: It frequently pairs with од: од почетка до краја (from beginning to end).
- Proximity: Она седи до мене (She is sitting next to me).
3. Privation: без
без simply denotes 'without' and always takes the genitive: без кафе (without coffee), без проблема (without a problem).
4. Persons, Proximity, and Idiomatic Locations: код
A crucial pattern is using код + genitive:
- For being at someone's place: код пријатеља (at a friend's place), код лекара (at the doctor's office).
- Directed motion: While formal standard Serbian expresses destination toward a person with the dative (Идем лекару), everyday spoken Serbian frequently uses код + genitive (Идем код лекара).
- Proximity with inanimate objects: With non-person nouns, код denotes proximity (by / near): код прозора (by the window). Note also the fixed, idiomatic expression код куће (at home), which functions as a lexicalized phrase.
Note on Single-Case Government:
Learners familiar with у and на (accusative vs. locative) sometimes mistakenly assume that movement automatically triggers the accusative. Remember that из, с/са, од, до, без, код never take the accusative—they strictly govern the genitive in all contexts.
Examples (5)
- Јелена је извадила пасош из торбе.
Jelena took the passport out of the bag.
Word by Word: Jelena is took passport out-of bag.
The preposition 'из' requires the genitive singular feminine ending '-е' (торба → торбе) to show emergence from an enclosed container.
- Од Новог Сада до Београда путујемо возом.
We travel from Novi Sad to Belgrade by train.
Word by Word: From Novi Sad to Belgrade we-travel by-train.
The correlative pair 'од ... до' requires genitive on both geographic names ('Новог Сада' and 'Београда').
- Он увек пије кафу без шећера.
He always drinks coffee without sugar.
Word by Word: He always drinks coffee without sugar.
'Без' takes the genitive singular masculine ending '-а' (шећер → шећера) to express absence.
- Данас идем код зубара.
Today I am going to the dentist's.
Word by Word: Today I-go to dentist.
When visiting a person or professional practice, Serbian uses 'код' + genitive ('зубар' → 'зубара'), even with verbs of motion.
- Чекам те код моста до пет сати.
I will wait for you by the bridge until five o'clock.
Word by Word: I-wait you by bridge until five hours.
'Код' expresses spatial proximity to a landmark ('код моста'), while 'до' marks the temporal deadline ('до пет сати'). Both govern the genitive.
Common Mistakes
Using 'са' instead of 'из' for origin from a country or town.
Долазим са Србије.Долазим из Србије.Towns and countries pair with 'у' (in/into) and 'из' (from/out of). 'Са' is the counterpart to 'на', so saying 'са Србије' is an incorrect transfer error.
Using the accusative case after 'до' or 'без'.
Идем до град и пијем кафу без млеко.Идем до града и пијем кафу без млека.'До' and 'без' unconditionally require the genitive case ('града', 'млека'). They never take the accusative, even when motion or purpose is implied.
Using 'у' + accusative when visiting a person instead of 'код' + genitive.
Идем у лекара сутра ујутру.Идем код лекара сутра ујутру.You use 'у' for entering physical buildings, but when the destination is a person, their clinic, or home, Serbian requires 'код' + genitive.
