ју
Avoiding Two Je Forms
The short accusative feminine pronoun is normally је (her/it). However, placing it directly next to the verbal clitic је (the 3rd-person singular present of бити, whether used as a past-tense auxiliary or as a copula in impersonal expressions) would create the awkward repetition *је је. Standard Serbian eliminates this clashing repetition by replacing the pronoun with ју, yielding the mandatory cluster ју је.
How It Works
In Serbian, clitics (short, unstressed words) gather in a strictly ordered group in the clause. Within this system, two foundational rules govern when to use ју instead of је:
1. Position of Verbal 'Је': Unlike the other present forms of бити у презенту (сам, си, смо, сте, су), which stand near the front of the clitic group, the 3rd-person singular clitic је на крају енклитичке групе stands at the very end of the cluster.
2. Dissimilation Before Verbal 'Је': The short direct object pronoun (accusative) for она (she / it) is standardly је. Whenever this accusative pronoun directly precedes the 3rd-person singular clitic verb је—whether је functions as the past-tense auxiliary or as the copula in impersonal expressions—the language avoids *је је by obligatorily replacing the pronoun with ју.
Environments for 'ју':
Standard Serbian licenses ју in the following clear grammatical settings:
• Mandatory immediately before verbal 'је':
– In the past tense: Петар ју је позвао. (Petar called her.) / Никола ју је нашао. (Nikola found it [e.g., the bag / торба]). Because enclitics cannot stand first in a clause (енклитике после прве целине), if no overt subject or introductory constituent opens the clause, the participle comes first: Позвао ју је (never *Ју је позвао).
– In impersonal or experiencer expressions with copular је taking an accusative experiencer: Страх ју је. (She is afraid.) / Срамота ју је. (She is ashamed.)
• In clusters with a dative clitic: Following standard clitic order (редослед: датив пре акузатива), a dative enclitic precedes the accusative: Dative + Accusative + Verbal 'је'. Because the accusative clitic stands right before је, ју remains mandatory: Петар му ју је дао. (Petar gave it/her to him.) / Ана ми ју је показала. (Ana showed it/her to me.)
• After negative 'није': Both није је and није ју are fully accepted standard variants in normative Serbian grammar (e.g., Петар није је видео or Петар није ју видео). Speakers often choose ју after није precisely to avoid the acoustic repetition of identical syllables (-је је).
• Phonetic dissimilation after words ending in -је: In standard Ijekavian, ју is also licensed when directly following words ending in -је (such as прије: прије ју погледај).
Where NOT to use 'ју' in Standard Serbian:
- Present-tense verbs ending in -је: The replacement rule applies to the verbal clitic је, not as an across-the-board sound rule for any verb that ends in -је. Ordinary present-tense verbs ending in -је take standard је: Он купује је / Он је купује (not *купује ју), Он пије је / Он је пије, Он је препознаје.
- With other auxiliary persons: Видео сам је (never *Видео сам ју), Позвао си је (never *Позвао си ју), Видели су је (never *Видели су ју).
- In standard present-tense clauses without verbal 'је': Ја је волим (never *Ја ју волим).
- With genitive objects: Ју is strictly an accusative form. When a verb or impersonal phrase governs the genitive case (such as жао ми је), the feminine pronoun remains genitive је or the full stressed form ње (e.g., Жао ми је ње; Сетио се ње; Није је било, never *Није ју било).
- After prepositions: Prepositions govern full, stressed pronouns (e.g., за њу or на њу, never *за ју).
Examples (4)
- Петар ју је видео јуче у позоришту.
Petar saw her yesterday at the theater.
Word by Word: Petar her is seen yesterday in theater.
Because the auxiliary is 'је' (3rd person singular), the object pronoun 'је' (her) becomes 'ју' to prevent saying '*је је'.
- Где је моја торба? Марко ју је оставио у колима.
Where is my bag? Marko left it in the car.
Word by Word: Where is my bag? Marko it is left in car.
The feminine noun 'торба' (bag) is replaced by the clitic object pronoun. Before auxiliary 'је', the pronoun must be 'ју'.
- Ана ју је замолила за помоћ.
Ana asked her for help.
Word by Word: Ana her is asked for help.
The clitic pair 'ју је' appears in the second position right after the initial subject 'Ана'.
- Купио је нову књигу и одмах ју је прочитао.
He bought a new book and immediately read it.
Word by Word: Bought is new book and immediately it is read.
Referring back to feminine 'књига' in the second clause, the accusative clitic takes the form 'ју' right before auxiliary 'је'.
Common Mistakes
Saying '*је је' by failing to apply the euphonic substitution rule.
Он је је позвао на вечеру.Он ју је позвао на вечеру.Standard Serbian does not tolerate the duplicate sequence '*је је'. The feminine direct object pronoun must change to 'ју'.
Reversing the clitic order into '*је ју'.
Видео је ју у парку.Видео ју је у парку.In Serbian clitic chains, the 3rd-person singular auxiliary 'је' must always stand at the very end of the cluster, after object pronouns.
Overextending 'ју' to other persons, present-tense clauses, or genitive complements.
Ја ју волим и јуче сам ју видео.Ја је волим и јуче сам је видео.Standard Serbian strictly confines 'ју' to the slot immediately preceding auxiliary 'је' (and optionally after 'није'). Unlike Croatian, which allows 'ju' much more broadly, Serbian requires regular 'је' with 'сам', 'си', or in the present tense.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand why 'ју' is used instead of 'је', learners must know the standard short accusative pronoun forms (where feminine singular is usually 'је'), how the past tense is formed using the auxiliary clitic 'је', and how clitics are ordered together.
