него / од + Genitive

Level 2Sounds Like nego; od + genitiv u poređen̂u

To say 'than' in Serbian comparisons, use од + genitive for simple nouns and pronouns (старији од мене), or него to link matching grammatical cases (више волим чај него кафу) and full clauses with него што (боље него што мислиш).

How It Works

When comparing two things using comparative forms (comparative adjectives and adverbs), choosing between од + генитив and него depends on syntax:

1. Simple Nominal Comparisons: од + Genitive (Default) vs. Conjunction него with Case Matching
When comparing directly against a single noun or pronoun subject, од + генитив is the primary, unmarked, and most idiomatic choice in everyday standard Serbian. The conjunction него can also be used, keeping parallel nominative case agreement by ellipsis:
• Милан је виши од Марка. (Default, most natural) / Милан је виши него Марко. (Milan is taller than Marko.)
• Она је бржа од нас. (Default, most natural) / Она је бржа него ми. (She is faster than we are.)

2. Clausal Comparisons: него што, него да, and correlative од
The preposition од cannot govern a finite verb directly. To compare with a full finite clause, use conjunctions with него (or its literary counterpart но):
• него што (or literary но што): Used for real, factual situations.
Стигли смо раније него што смо очекивали. (We arrived earlier than we expected.)
Alternatively, од can head such comparisons through a pronominal correlative: Стигли смо раније од онога што смо очекивали.
• него да (or literary но да): Used for hypothetical alternatives or modal preferences.
Радије бих шетао него да гледам телевизију. (I would rather walk than watch television.)

3. Case Matching, Disambiguation, and Required Uses of него
For simple inanimate direct objects, both constructions can occur (e.g. Више волим јабуке него крушке or Више волим јабуке од крушака). However, word choice and grammar interact in important ways:
• Disambiguating Subject vs. Object: Using од + генитив with animate participants (e.g. Ана воли Петра више од Марка) is ambiguous—it could mean Marko also loves Petar, or that Ana loves Marko too. Using the conjunction него allows case matching to make the syntactic role completely clear:
Ана воли Петра више него Марко. (nominative: Marko loves Petar too, but Ana loves him more.)
Ана воли Петра више него Марка. (accusative: Ana loves Marko too, but she loves Petar more.)
• Indirect objects (dative): Више верујем теби него њему. (I trust you more than him.)
• Prepositional phrases: Because Serbian strictly forbids stacking prepositions (од cannot precede another preposition), you must use него.
Пријатније је у шуми него на плажи. (It is pleasanter in the forest than on the beach.)
• Adverbs: Боље је данас него јуче. (It is better today than yesterday.)

Examples (5)

  1. Ова књига је занимљивија од оног филма.

This book is more interesting than that movie.

Word by Word: This book is more-interesting than that movie.

Direct nominal comparison using 'од' followed by the masculine demonstrative and noun in the genitive case ('оног филма').

  2. Он је много старији од мене.

He is much older than me.

Word by Word: He is much older than me.

The personal pronoun follows 'од', requiring the genitive form 'мене'.

  3. Стигли смо раније него што смо планирали.

We arrived earlier than we had planned.

Word by Word: Arrived we-are earlier than what we-have planned.

A clause with a conjugated past-tense verb requires the compound conjunction 'него што'.

  4. Марија више помаже Марку него Петру.

Marija helps Marko more than [she helps] Petar.

Word by Word: Marija more helps Marko than Petar.

Since the verb 'помагати' governs the dative case, 'него' preserves dative agreement on both objects ('Марку', 'Петру').

  5. Више волим кафу него чај.

I like coffee more than tea.

Word by Word: More I-like coffee than tea.

Both objects remain in the accusative case ('кафу', 'чај') connected symmetrically by 'него'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'од' instead of 'него што' directly before a clause

Било је боље од мислио сам.
Било је боље него што сам мислио.

The preposition 'од' cannot govern a finite clause or conjugated verb. You must use 'него што' to connect full clauses.

  • Forcing the genitive case after 'него'

    Он је виши него мене.
    Он је виши од мене.

'Него' is a conjunction, not a preposition. Use either 'од + genitive' ('од мене') or match the nominative subject with 'него' ('него ја').

  • Using 'већ' instead of 'него' in comparisons

Овај ауто је бржи већ онај.
Овај ауто је бржи него онај.

While 'већ' can mean 'but rather' in adversative sentences ('није он, већ ја'), it can never mean 'than' in comparative structures.
