Clitics After the First Constituent
In Serbian, unstressed clitics (like 'је', 'смо', 'ти', 'се') occupy the clause's second position. Rather than splitting phrases mechanically after the first literal word, contemporary standard Serbian places clitics directly after the entire opening constituent (such as a full name, noun phrase, or prepositional phrase).
How It Works
Unstressed words in Serbian comprise proclitics (prepositions, certain conjunctions) and enclitics (енклитике). Serbian enclitics include short auxiliary verbs, pronominal clitics (including the reflexive enclitic pronoun се), and the interrogative particle ли. Generally, they lean onto an accented host in the second position of their clause domain, although placement shows flexibility depending on phrase length and intonation.
1. Constituent (1P) vs. First-Word (1W) Placement:
In contemporary standard Serbian, placing verbal and pronominal clitics after the entire opening syntactic constituent (прва целина or синтагма) is widely favored and neutral in both everyday speech and formal prose:
- Моја сестра му се јавила. (My sister contacted him.)
- Прошлог лета смо ишли на море. (Last summer we went to the seaside.)
- Петар Петровић је стигао. (Petar Petrović has arrived.)
- Добра књига је леп поклон. (A good book is a nice present.)
- Добри људи ми увек помогну. (Good people always help me.)
Standard grammars also recognize first-word (1W) placement. However, its distribution in contemporary Serbian is nuanced:
- Determiners, pronominal adjectives, and quantifiers: Inserting clitics directly after the first word is common and standard (e.g., Тај је човек стигао; Сва су врата затворена; Неки су људи отишли).
- Inside adverbial phrases and after focusing particles: Врло су храбро то урадили; Само се из Ниша нико није пријавио.
- Descriptive (qualitative) adjectives: Splitting a noun phrase after a descriptive adjective (e.g., Добри ми људи увек помогну; Добра се роба брзо прода) is stylistically marked in contemporary standard Serbian as archaic, gnomic/proverbial, or folkloric/poetic. Neutral modern prose strictly prefers whole-constituent placement here (Добри људи ми увек помогну).
Proper names (e.g., *Вук је Караџић...) cannot be split. Furthermore, simple prepositions are unstressed proclitics, so they cannot bear accent or host an enclitic (*У је соби...).
Important note on the question particle ли:
Unlike auxiliary and pronominal enclitics, the interrogative particle ли cannot follow a multi-word constituent (*Добра књига ли је леп поклон?, *Моја сестра ли му се јавила?). It attaches strictly to the first stressed word of its clause—most commonly an inflected verb (Знаш ли одговор?), the complementizer да ли, or an interrogative pronoun/adverb (Где ли је?, Шта ли ради?).
2. Heavy Constituents and Delayed Placement:
When the opening constituent is long and syntactically complex (a heavy noun phrase), placing enclitics directly after the complete constituent remains fully standard and regular (e.g., Професор увода у филозофију је добар човек). However, because such heavy phrases often introduce an intonational break, standard Serbian also permits delayed placement (одложено постављање) as a stylistic and prosodic option, where the clitic cluster attaches after the first accented word inside the predicate:
- Constituent placement (standard): Професор увода у лингвистику је добар човек. (The professor of introduction to linguistics is a good man.)
- Delayed placement (alternative): Професор увода у лингвистику добар је човек.
- Constituent placement (standard): Родитељи успешних студената су се разишли. (The parents of the successful students dispersed.)
- Delayed placement (alternative): Родитељи успешних студената разишли су се.
Crucial restriction: Delayed placement is permitted only when the opening constituent is heavy. When the subject is a short or single-word constituent, delayed placement into the predicate is strictly ungrammatical (e.g., Професор је добар човек, never *Професор добар је човек).
3. The Pause / Comma Reset Rule:
Because enclitics lack an accent, they must lean phonetically on a preceding stressed word within the same prosodic domain. Any parenthetical phrase, vocative, or clause boundary set off by commas creates an intonational reset. An enclitic can never stand directly after a comma.
When parentheticals appear, native speakers typically place clitics before the parenthetical, or attach them after the first stressed word following the comma:
- Correct: Петар се, наравно, јавио. / Incorrect: *Петар, наравно, се јавио.
- Correct: Данас су, међутим, стигли на време. / Also correct: Данас, међутим, стигли су на време. / Incorrect: *Данас, међутим, су стигли на време.
4. Conjunctions and Clause Heads:
Unstressed coordinating conjunctions like и and а are proclitics and cannot host enclitics (И видео сам га, never *И сам га видео). By contrast, coordinating conjunctions with independent stress like али (али сам видео), as well as subordinating complementizers and conjunctions like да, јер, and ако, define the beginning of a subordinate clause domain and host clitics directly in second position.
5. Internal Clitic Group Order:
When multiple enclitics cluster together after the first constituent, they follow a fixed sequence:
- Question particle: ли
- Auxiliary verbs: сам, си, смо, сте, су, ћу, бих... (except је)
- Dative pronouns: ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им
- Accusative/Genitive pronouns: ме, те, га, је, нас, вас, их
- Reflexive enclitic pronoun: се
- Auxiliary copula/past: је
Key exceptions in the final slot:
• The auxiliary је is obligatorily omitted whenever the reflexive marker се is present (e.g., Он се вратио, never *Он се је вратио).
• When the feminine accusative pronoun је precedes the auxiliary је, it dissimilates to ју to avoid homophonic clash (e.g., Видео ју је, rather than *Видео је је).
Examples (4)
- Моја млађа сестра је јуче отпутовала.
My younger sister left yesterday.
Word by Word: My younger sister AUX yesterday departed.
The subject noun phrase 'Моја млађа сестра' serves as the complete initial constituent, hosting the auxiliary clitic 'је' directly after it.
- Прошлог лета смо ишли на море.
Last summer we went to the seaside.
Word by Word: Last summer AUX went to sea.
The entire temporal phrase 'Прошлог лета' forms the opening constituent, followed immediately by the auxiliary enclitic 'смо'.
- Тај нови професор им се одмах допао.
They immediately liked that new professor.
Word by Word: That new professor to-them REFL immediately liked.
The clitic group 'им се' follows the entire subject phrase 'Тај нови професор' without splitting the demonstrative and adjective from the noun.
- Јелена и Ивана, моје добре другарице, дошле су малопре.
Jelena and Ivana, my good friends, arrived a little while ago.
Word by Word: Jelena and Ivana, my good friends, arrived AUX a-short-while-ago.
The apposition inside commas creates an intonational boundary. The clitic 'су' cannot follow the comma directly; it attaches after the stressed verb 'дошле'.
Common Mistakes
Placing an enclitic immediately after an introductory word followed by a comma.
Нажалост, сам заборавио кључеве.Нажалост, заборавио сам кључеве.Enclitics cannot follow an intonational pause or comma because they lack independent stress and cannot attach backward across an intonational phrase boundary. The enclitic must attach to the first stressed host in the new clause or prosodic unit (here, 'заборавио').
Splitting a proper name, title, or tight set phrase with an enclitic.
Петар је Петровић дошао на састанак.Петар Петровић је дошао на састанак.While modern Serbian permits splitting certain noun phrases after a demonstrative or possessive pronoun (e.g., 'Тај ми је човек рекао'), proper names and titles form an indivisible syntactic unit and can never be broken apart by an enclitic.
Attaching an enclitic directly to unstressed coordinating conjunctions like 'и' or 'а'.
И сам видео пријатеља.И видео сам пријатеља.Unstressed coordinating conjunctions like 'и' and 'а' are proclitics and cannot serve as phonetic hosts for enclitics. The enclitic must attach after the first stressed word that follows them (such as the verb 'видео').
