Short Accusative Pronouns
Short accusative pronouns (ме, те, га, је/ју, нас, вас, их) function as unstressed direct objects in Serbian. They correspond to English "me, you, him/it, her, us, you, them" and are the natural, everyday default when no special emphasis or preposition is involved.
How It Works
In Serbian, direct objects can be expressed either through long stressed pronouns or short unstressed pronouns (enclitics). In normal conversational and written registers, the short enclitic forms are the default choices whenever the object is not emphasized or preceded by a preposition.
The Paradigm:
- ме (1st sg.) – me
- те (2nd sg.) – you
- га (3rd sg. masc./neut.) – him / it
- је / ју (3rd sg. fem.) – her / it
- нас (1st pl.) – us
- вас (2nd pl. / polite) – you
- их (3rd pl. all genders) – them
Placement Rules (Second Position):
Short pronouns cannot start a sentence. They attach directly after the first tonic word or after the first complete noun phrase. For example: Ана ме види (Ana sees me) or Тај човек ме види (That man sees me).
Clitic Ordering:
When clitics combine, they obey a fixed slot order: question particle ли → verbal clitics (except auxiliary је) → dative pronouns → genitive / accusative pronouns → reflexive marker се → auxiliary је. Note that a true accusative direct object clitic and reflexive се never co-occur in the same clause (pronouns preceding се, as in Он ме се плаши, are in the genitive case). Direct objects consistently come after recipients: dative before accusative (e.g., Дао ми га је).
The Special Shift of је to ју:
To prevent identical sounding syllables in contact, the feminine pronoun је obligatorily becomes ју whenever it stands directly before the auxiliary verb је: avoiding two je forms (e.g., Петар ју је видео, never *Петар је је видео).
Examples (4)
- Ана ме чека испред школе.
Ana is waiting for me in front of the school.
Word by Word: Ana me waits in-front-of school.
The 1st person short pronoun 'ме' sits in second position immediately following the subject 'Ана'.
- Где си нашао кључеве? — Нашао сам их у џепу.
Where did you find the keys? — I found them in my pocket.
Word by Word: Where did-you find keys? — Found am them in pocket.
The pronoun 'их' replaces the plural noun 'кључеве' and follows the auxiliary verb 'сам'.
- Петар ју је препознао на улици.
Petar recognized her on the street.
Word by Word: Petar her is recognized on street.
The feminine direct object pronoun shifts from 'је' to 'ју' because the auxiliary verb 'је' immediately follows.
- Да ли га познајеш?
Do you know him?
Word by Word: Whether him you-know?
The short masculine object pronoun 'га' leans on the question phrase 'да ли'.
Common Mistakes
Placing a short pronoun at the beginning of a clause.
Ме види сваки дан.Он ме види сваки дан.Clitics cannot take initial sentence stress. They must lean on an accented host word or phrase, appearing in second position.
Using short accusative pronouns directly after prepositions.
Ово писмо је за га.Ово писмо је за њега.Prepositions require the full stressed forms (мене, тебе, њега, њу, нас, вас, њих), not unstressed clitics.
Writing double 'је је' instead of converting the pronoun to 'ју'.
Милан је је позвао на ручак.Милан ју је позвао на ручак.In Standard Serbian, the feminine clitic pronoun 'је' obligatorily shifts to 'ју' directly preceding the auxiliary verb 'је'.
