Adjective Agreement
In Serbian, an adjective must mirror its noun in three dimensions: gender (masculine, feminine, or neuter), number (singular or plural), and case (nominative, accusative, etc.). Whether placed right in front of the noun or after the verb 'to be', the adjective's ending changes to match its noun controller.
How It Works
Adjective agreement (слагање придева са именицом) operates in two structural positions:
1. Attributive: Directly modifying a noun within a phrase (e.g., добар пријатељ – 'a good friend').
2. Predicative: Following a copular verb like бити (e.g., Кућа је нова – 'The house is new').
Key Rules for Agreement:
- Grammatical Category vs. Rhyming: Adjectives follow an adjective declension, not a noun declension. Do not try to make the last letter physically rhyme. For instance, consonant-ending feminine nouns like ноћ ('night') take feminine adjective endings (хладна ноћ), while masculine personal nouns ending in -а like судија ('judge') take masculine adjective forms (строги судија).
- Animacy Split in the Accusative Singular: In the singular direct object position, masculine nouns and their modifying adjectives distinguish grammatically animate entities (specifically people and animals, not plants or trees) from inanimate objects via animate and inanimate masculine accusatives. Animate masculine singulars take the genitive-like ending -ог(а) / -ег(а) (Видим доброг дечака; Видим црног пса), whereas inanimate nouns retain the nominative form (Видим нов телефон; Видим леп цвет). Crucially, this animacy distinction applies strictly to the masculine singular; in the plural, all masculine accusative objects take -е regardless of animacy (e.g., Видим добре дечаке and Видим нове телефоне).
- Stem Softness: Adjectives whose stem ends in a palatal consonant (ј, љ, њ, ћ, ђ, ч, џ, ш, ж) take -е instead of -о in the neuter singular nominative (вруће млеко) and -ег / -ем in masculine and neuter oblique cases.
- Fleeting A: Many masculine adjectives feature a disappearing а in the indefinite nominative singular that drops when any ending is attached (хладан → хладна, хладно).
- Invariable Adjectives: Borrowed adjectives (such as розе, беж, фер) never change their form regardless of gender or case.
Examples (4)
- Купио сам нов телефон и занимљиву књигу.
I bought a new phone and an interesting book.
Word by Word: Bought have-I new phone and interesting book.
The masculine inanimate direct object 'телефон' triggers the nominative-like masculine accusative 'нов', while feminine 'књигу' takes the feminine accusative ending '-у' on the adjective 'занимљиву'.
- Јуче смо видели твог старог професора.
Yesterday we saw your old professor.
Word by Word: Yesterday were saw your old professor.
Because 'професор' is a masculine animate noun in the accusative case, both the possessive and descriptive adjectives take the genitive-accusative ending '-ог'.
- Они живе у овој лепој белој кући.
They live in this beautiful white house.
Word by Word: They live in this beautiful white house.
The feminine noun 'кућа' is in the locative singular ('у кући'), so every preceding demonstrative and descriptive adjective adopts the feminine locative ending '-ој'.
- Моја соба је велика и светла.
My room is large and bright.
Word by Word: My room is large and bright.
Shows predicative agreement: even though separated from the subject 'соба' by the verb 'је', the adjectives agree in the feminine nominative singular.
Common Mistakes
Treating masculine animate objects like inanimate objects in the accusative case.
Јуче сам видео добар пријатељ.Јуче сам видео доброг пријатеља.Male humans and animals in the accusative take the genitive ending '-ог' on the adjective, not the bare nominative form.
Mechanically rhyming the adjective suffix with the noun's final sound.
Ово је таман ноћ.Ово је тамна ноћ.The noun 'ноћ' ends in a consonant but is grammatically feminine, meaning the adjective must take the feminine ending '-а'.
Leaving predicative adjectives in the masculine default after the verb 'to be'.
Кафа је био хладан.Кафа је била хладна.An adjective following the copula must agree with the subject noun. 'Кафа' is feminine, so both the past participle and adjective must be feminine singular.
How It Connects
Learn This First
Adjective agreement requires coordinating an adjective with its head noun in gender, number, and case. To do this, learners need to know how noun gender works, how noun plurals are formed, and the foundational nominative adjective forms.
- -и / -е / -аCommon Noun Plurals
Agreement requires matching grammatical number, so understanding how noun plural forms are marked is necessary to apply plural adjective endings.
