Short Pronouns and Clitic Order
Serbian short pronouns and auxiliary verbs are enclitics (unstressed words). They cannot carry an accent or begin a sentence. Instead, they gather together in a rigid sequence called a clitic cluster, anchoring to the second slot of the clause (right after the first word or phrase).
How It Works
Enclitics (енклитике) are unstressed grammatical words that attach prosodically to the word before them.
1. Position in the Clause (P2)
Enclitics can never start a clause or immediately follow an intonational pause (such as a comma), regardless of sentence mood. Instead, they appear in the second position (P2) of the clause or intonational unit. For instance, after a vocative or a subordinate clause marked by a comma, an enclitic cannot immediately follow the comma (e.g., *Кад стигнеш, ми се јави is ungrammatical; an overt word must host them: Кад стигнеш, јави ми се; Марко, донеси ми књигу). In direct questions such as Је ли дошао? or Би ли пошао?, the initial verb form је or би carries tonic stress precisely to serve as the phonological host for the interrogative enclitic ли. In ordinary statements, the clitic cluster occurs either:
- After the first complete constituent: Тај нови комшија ми се јавио.
- After the first accented word: Тај ми се нови комшија јавио.
In modern standard Serbian, keeping the first noun phrase intact before the clitic cluster is the most common and neutral choice.
Conjunctions and Clitic Hosts: Enclitics cannot immediately follow unstressed coordinating conjunctions like и, а, and ни (e.g., *И сам га видео is ungrammatical; an overt host must intervene: И ја сам га видео). However, they can immediately follow clause-initial complementizers and subordinating conjunctions (да, јер, ако, док) because these conjunctions define the clause boundary and syntactically introduce the clause, as well as accented coordinating conjunctions like али and па (e.g., Јер сам га видео; Али ми се јавио; Па сам му рекао; Да си ми жив и здрав).
2. Rigid Internal Cluster Order
When several clitics appear together, they must be arranged in this exact sequence:
- Question particle: ли
- Verbal auxiliaries (except је): сам, си, смо, сте, су; ћу, ћеш, ће, ћемо, ћете, ће; бих, би, бисмо, бисте, би
- Dative pronouns: ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им
- Genitive pronouns: ме, те, га, је, нас, вас, их
- Accusative pronouns: ме, те, га, је (or ју), нас, вас, их
- Reflexive: се (e.g., genitive precedes reflexive: Не могу више торте, довољно сам је се најео; Она ме се плаши)
- The auxiliary је: Placed at the very end of the cluster!
3. Important Special Rules
- Dative precedes Accusative: Он ми га је дао (He gave it to me), never га ми.
- Avoiding 'је је': If the accusative pronoun је occurs before the auxiliary је, the pronoun changes to ју (e.g., Видео ју је, never Видео је је).
- Dropping 'је' with 'се': In the 3rd person singular past tense (перфекат), the auxiliary је is obligatorily omitted whenever reflexive се is present (e.g., Он се насмејао, never Он се је насмејао; Тај нови комшија ми се јавио).
- Prepositions: In standard contemporary Serbian, prepositions require full (stressed) pronoun forms rather than enclitics; use full object pronouns after prepositions (e.g., за мене, not за ме).
Examples (4)
- Јуче ми га је послао.
He sent it to me yesterday.
Word by Word: Yesterday to-me it has sent.
Follows the required order: Dative 'ми' + Accusative 'га' + auxiliary 'је' at the end of the cluster.
- Да ли си му га дао?
Did you give it to him?
Word by Word: Whether [question] have to-him it given?
Cluster order: question particle 'ли' + auxiliary 'си' + dative 'му' + accusative 'га'.
- Моја сестра ће вам се јавити сутра.
My sister will contact you tomorrow.
Word by Word: My sister will to-you self contact tomorrow.
Placed after the first constituent ('Моја сестра'): future auxiliary 'ће' + dative 'вам' + reflexive 'се'.
- Петар ју је јуче упознао.
Petar met her yesterday.
Word by Word: Petar her has yesterday met.
Shows phonological dissimilation: feminine accusative 'је' becomes 'ју' before the auxiliary 'је'.
Common Mistakes
Starting a sentence with an enclitic pronoun or auxiliary
Га видим сваки дан.Видим га сваки дан.Enclitics carry no stress and cannot stand in the first position. Start with the verb or an overt pronoun: 'Видим га' or 'Ја га видим'.
Placing auxiliary 'је' before object pronouns
Он је ми дао књигу.Он ми је дао књигу.Unlike all other auxiliaries (сам, си, смо, сте, су), 3rd-person singular 'је' is pushed to the very end of the clitic group, after dative and accusative pronouns.
Reversing dative and accusative order
Марко га ми је показао.Марко ми га је показао.Dative clitics must always precede accusative clitics in the cluster ('ми га', never 'га ми').
How It Connects
Learn This First
Short pronouns and auxiliary clitics follow strict second-position (Wackernagel's law) ordering rules in Serbian clauses. To learn their placement, learners must first be familiar with basic verbal auxiliaries (such as the short forms of 'бити'), the question particle 'ли', and direct object case relations that short pronoun forms represent.
- да ли / лиYes or No Questions
The interrogative particle 'ли' is the topmost item in the clitic ordering hierarchy, making familiarity with question clitics crucial.
