уколико ... утолико

Correlated Conditions and Degree

Level 6Sounds Like ukoliko ... utoliko

Уколико … утолико is an advanced, formal correlative construction in Serbian. It functions primarily in two ways:
1. Proportional correlation: 'The more / to the degree that [X], the more / to that degree [Y]' (the bookish equivalent of што ... то).
2. Restrictive condition: 'Insofar as [X holds], (only) to that extent [Y holds]'.

Because it strictly balances degree and measure, it cannot be substituted for ordinary factual 'if… then' binary conditions.

How It Works

1. Syntactic Structure and Proportionality

In proportional sentences (сразмерне реченице), уколико … утолико introduces covariance: an incremental shift in one clause generates a parallel shift in the second.

  • Уколико је притисак већи, утолико је ризик озбиљнији.
(The greater the pressure, the more serious the risk.)

Notice that both clauses employ comparatives (већи, озбиљнији).

2. Restrictive-Scalar Conditions

Unlike a standard factual condition introduced by ако (which simply tests a condition), уколико … утолико measures the extent or boundary of validity:

  • Тај предлог има смисла утолико уколико смањује трошкове.
(That proposal makes sense only insofar as / to the degree that it reduces costs.)

3. Clause Order and Punctuation

• When the subordinate clause is fronted (Уколико..., утолико...), a separating comma is grammatically mandatory.
• When the order is reversed (утолико..., уколико...), the comma is customary before уколико when marking an explanatory qualification, though it can be omitted in tightly linked restrictive modifiers.

4. Orthographic Caution

Do not confuse the fused conjunctions with the separated prepositional phrase:
• Уколико (one word): Conjunction meaning 'insofar as' or 'if'.
• У колико (two words): Preposition + quantifier pronoun (e.g., У колико сати почиње састанак? — 'At what time does the meeting start?').

5. Stylistic Usage and Nuance

In bureaucratic and journalistic Serbian, уколико frequently appears alone as a synonym for ако. However, in classic standard prose, its primary and most precise role is correlative. Avoid using утолико merely as a substitute for binary conditional or temporal онда in simple 'ако ... онда' frames; outside proportional pairs, standard Serbian uses утолико primarily in explanatory or intensifying constructions such as утолико пре што / утолико што ('all the more so because').

Examples (4)

  1. Уколико је неки проблем сложенији, утолико га је важније анализирати систематски.

The more complex a problem is, the more important it is to analyze it systematically.

Word by Word: In-as-much is some problem more-complex, in-so-much it is more-important to-analyze systematically.

Proportional correlation showing parallel degrees with comparatives (сложенији, важније).

  2. Овај компромис је прихватљив утолико уколико не доводи у питање основна начела споразума.

This compromise is acceptable insofar as it does not call into question the basic tenets of the agreement.

Word by Word: This compromise is acceptable in-so-much in-as-much not brings into question basic tenets of-agreement.

Restrictive condition where the main clause precedes, qualifying the boundary of validity.

  3. Уколико су очекивања јавности већа, утолико је разочарање дубље.

The higher the public's expectations, the deeper the disappointment.

Word by Word: In-as-much are expectations of-public greater, in-so-much is disappointment deeper.

Formal proportional parallelism balancing two comparative adjectives (већа, дубље).

  4. Његов поступак је утолико значајнији уколико знамо под каквим је околностима радио.

His achievement is all the more significant insofar as we know the circumstances under which he worked.

Word by Word: His action is in-so-much more-significant in-as-much we-know under what circumstances was worked.

Main-clause утолико highlights heightened degree ('all the more'), justified by the subordinate clause.

Common Mistakes

  • Using утолико as a binary 'then' (онда) for yes/no factual conditions without degree.

Уколико сутра воз дође на време, утолико ћемо стићи на састанак.
Ако сутра воз дође на време, онда ћемо стићи на састанак.

Arriving on time is a binary prerequisite, not a graded scale. Use 'ако … онда' for true/false conditions; 'утолико' requires an element of degree or proportion.

  • Writing the fused conjunction as two separate words.

Јави ми у колико буде неких промена.
Јави ми уколико буде неких промена.

When functioning as a conditional or scalar connective, 'уколико' must be written as a single word. Two words ('у колико') is strictly reserved for temporal or interrogative phrases like 'У колико сати?'.

  • Using the formal "уколико ... утолико" in everyday speech.

Different MeaningУколико раније кренемо, утолико ћемо пре стићи на кафу.
Што раније кренемо, то ћемо пре стићи на кафу.

"Уколико раније кренемо, утолико ћемо пре стићи" is correct, but it is formal and bookish. In everyday speech people say "што ... то".
