у / на + Accusative / Locative
Destination and Location
The prepositions у (in/into) and на (on/onto/at) choose their case based on motion: use the Accusative when answering Куда? (Where to?), and the Locative when answering Где? (Where at?).
How It Works
In Serbian, the spatial prepositions у and на govern two distinct cases depending on whether you express destination or static location:
1. Accusative for Destination (Куда идеш? — Where are you going?):
When an action involves movement towards, into, or onto a target boundary, the preposition governs the accusative case.
• Inanimate masculine nouns keep their base form in the singular: Идем у град (I am going to town), Стави то на сто (Put that on the table).
• Feminine nouns ending in -а change to -у: Идем у школу (I am going to school), Идем на плажу (I am going to the beach).
• Neuter nouns keep their base ending: Идемо у село (We are going to the village).
2. Locative for Static Position (Где си? — Where are you?):
When describing stationary presence or existing within a place, use the locative case.
• Masculine and neuter nouns take -у in the singular: Живим у граду (I live in the city), Књига је на столу (The book is on the table), Живимо у селу (We live in the village).
• Feminine nouns ending in -а take -и in the singular: Она је у школи (She is at school), Сунчамо се на плажи (We sunbathe on the beach).
3. Choosing Between 'У' and 'На':
• У is used for enclosed 3D spaces, rooms, countries, towns, and most civic buildings or institutions: у соби (in the room), у Србији (in Serbia), у ресторану (in the restaurant), у банци (in the bank), у школи (at school).
• На is used for flat/open surfaces (на улици, на мору), events and activities (на концерту, на послу), transit stations (на станици, на аеродрому), and higher education (на факултету, на универзитету).
Important Note on Motion:
The Accusative marks motion directed into or onto a destination. If an action or movement takes place entirely within a location, use the Locative: Шетамо у парку (We are walking [around] in the park).
Examples (6)
- Сутра путујемо у Београд.
Tomorrow we are traveling to Belgrade.
Word by Word: Tomorrow we-travel into Belgrade.
Because Belgrade is the goal destination of travel, 'у' takes the inanimate masculine Accusative ('Београд').
- Тренутно живимо у Београду.
Currently, we live in Belgrade.
Word by Word: Currently we-live in Belgrade-LOC.
Living in a city is a stationary location, so 'у' takes the Locative ending '-у' ('Београду').
- Спустио је кључеве на сто.
He put the keys on the table.
Word by Word: Put he-has keys onto table-ACC.
Moving the keys onto the surface of the table takes the inanimate masculine Accusative ('сто').
- Кључеви су на столу.
The keys are on the table.
Word by Word: Keys are on table-LOC.
The keys are resting in place on the surface, requiring 'на' with the Locative ending '-у' ('столу').
- Свако јутро журим на посао.
Every morning I hurry to work.
Word by Word: Every morning I-hurry onto work-ACC.
'Посао' (work/job) uses 'на' for institutions/activities, taking the Accusative to indicate heading there.
- Цео дан сам на послу.
I am at work all day.
Word by Word: Whole day I-am on work-LOC.
Being stationed at work requires 'на' with the Locative form ('послу').
Common Mistakes
Using the Locative case when expressing movement toward a destination.
Идем у Београду.Идем у Београд.Masculine inanimate nouns take an Accusative identical to their base Nominative form for destinations. The '-u' ending on masculine nouns marks the Locative, which is only for static locations.
Using the Accusative case when answering where you are located.
Где си? — У кафић.Где си? — У кафићу.When stating static presence in an establishment, you must use the Locative ('у кафићу'), not the directional Accusative ('у кафић').
'У послу' is correct, but it means being busy with work, not being at your workplace.
Different MeaningДанас сам у послу.Данас сам на послу.'Данас сам у послу' says you are caught up in your work or in business. To say you are at the place where you work, Serbian uses 'на': 'на послу', and also 'на факултету', 'на концерту'.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To contrast destination with location using 'у' and 'на', you must understand noun genders, the endings for the accusative case (for destination), and typical motion verbs like 'ићи'.
- Direct Objects
You need to know how nouns change into the accusative case in order to express motion or destination using 'у' and 'на'.
Level 1 - Noun Gender
Understanding noun genders is required to properly form the correct case endings for accusative and locative.
Level 1 - ићиGoing Somewhere
The contrast between destination (with accusative) and static location relies heavily on motion verbs like 'ићи'.
