Ordinary Past Tense

Level 2Sounds Like perfekat: biti + radni glagolski pridev

The perfekat is the universal, everyday past tense in Serbian. It translates both the English simple past ("I read") and present perfect ("I have read"). You form it with an unstressed auxiliary verb plus a past participle.

How It Works

The perfekat is the primary everyday past tense across modern Serbian, largely replacing older narrative past tenses in standard contemporary speech.

1. Structure of the Tense
The tense is compound (periphrastic) and requires two components:

  • Auxiliary verb: In ordinary affirmative statements, use the enclitic present forms of the auxiliary (сам, си, је, смо, сте, су). In negative statements, use the fused tonic negative forms (нисам, ниси, није, нисмо, нисте, нису). In questions, clauses often use да ли (Да ли си видео?) or invert with ли. When starting with the auxiliary before ли, other persons use tonic forms (Јеси ли видео?, Јесте ли видели?), but the 3rd person singular uniquely uses the short form sentence-initially: Је ли (Је ли видео?). In this inverted question frame with ли, Јесте ли is reserved for the 2nd person plural (Јесте ли видели?), so *Јесте ли видео? is not used for 3rd person singular questions.
  • Active past participle (радни глаголски придев): Formed on the verb stem and marked for gender and number:
    • Singular: masculine -о / -ао (consonant stems insert a fleeting а, e.g., могао, рекао), feminine -ла, neuter -ло
    • Plural: masculine -ли, feminine -ле, neuter -ла

2. Aspect and Meaning
The tense itself is aspect-neutral. Whether an action was ongoing or fully completed depends entirely on verb aspect:

  • Писао сам (imperfective) = "I was writing / I used to write"
  • Написао сам (perfective) = "I wrote / I have finished writing"

Unlike English, Serbian uses the exact same tense whether specifying a distinct past timestamp (Јуче сам дошао = "I came yesterday") or an open result (Већ сам јео = "I have already eaten").

3. Word Order and Clitic Placement
Because the short affirmative auxiliary forms are enclitics, they adhere to second-position placement rules (clitic ordering):

  • With an explicit pronoun: Ја сам видео ("I saw").
  • Without a pronoun (dropped subject): The participle moves to the first position so the enclitic can lean on it: Видео сам (never *Сам видео).
  • Position relative to other clitics: Most auxiliary clitics (сам, си, смо, сте, су) stand at the very beginning of the clitic cluster before pronominal enclitics (Дао сам му га). Uniquely, the 3rd person singular auxiliary је moves to the very end of the clitic chain: Дао му га је.

4. Dropping 'је' with 'се'
In standard contemporary Serbian, whenever the clitic се appears in the 3rd person singular—whether with true reflexives, reciprocal verbs, mediopassives, or impersonal constructions—the auxiliary је is standardly omitted to avoid clitic clustering: Ана се пробудила (rather than *Ана се је пробудила) and Десило се (rather than *Десило се је).

Examples (4)

  1. Јуче смо цело вече гледали филмове.

Yesterday we watched movies the whole evening.

Word by Word: Yesterday AUX.1PL whole evening watched.PL.M movies.

Shows the imperfective verb 'гледати' in the past, with the masculine plural participle 'гледали' agreeing with 'ми' (we).

  2. Ана је већ завршила факултет.

    Ana has already finished university.

Word by Word: Ana AUX.3SG already finished.SG.F university.

Demonstrates the 3rd person singular with the auxiliary 'је' and feminine participle ending '-ла' agreeing with Ana.

  3. Петар се јутрос рано пробудио.

Petar woke up early this morning.

Word by Word: Petar REFL this-morning early woke-up.SG.M.

Shows a reflexive verb in the 3rd person singular past. Notice that the auxiliary 'је' is omitted next to 'се'.

  4. Прочитао сам твоју нову поруку.

    I read your new message.

Word by Word: Read.SG.M AUX.1SG your new message.

Illustrates dropped pronoun word order: the participle 'прочитао' comes first so the auxiliary enclitic 'сам' can attach in second position.

Common Mistakes

  • Starting a sentence with the short auxiliary verb.

    Сам видео Марка у граду.
    Видео сам Марка у граду.

Short forms like 'сам', 'си', and 'је' are enclitics and cannot stand in absolute first position. If you drop the subject pronoun, place the participle first.

  • Keeping the auxiliary 'је' when using 3rd person singular with 'се'.

    Она се је вратила кући.
    Она се вратила кући.

Standard Serbian applies a specific grammatical rule that drops the auxiliary 'је' in 3rd person singular reflexive constructions with 'се'.

  • Omitting the auxiliary in 3rd person non-reflexive sentences.

    Марко прочитао књигу.
    Марко је прочитао књигу.

Unlike Russian, standard Serbian requires the auxiliary 'је' in non-reflexive statements. Dropping it is marked or headline-style.
