Comparing Actions
In Serbian, to compare actions (e.g., 'run faster', 'speak better'), use the comparative form of the adverb. Morphologically, this form is identical to the neuter singular comparative adjective (ending typically in -е), but because it modifies an action, it never changes for gender, number, or case.
How It Works
When describing how, when, where, or to what degree an action occurs compared to another benchmark, Serbian uses компаратив прилога (comparative of adverbs).
1. Morphological Formation:
Degrees of comparison primarily belong to qualitative adverbs (описни прилози) and certain adverbs of quantity, along with a small, limited set of temporal, spatial, and frequency adverbs (such as рано, касно, често, близу, далеко). In form, comparative adverbs are identical to the neuter singular comparative adjective:
- Suffix -је (with jotation / јотовање): брзо → брже (faster), јако → јаче (stronger/louder), тихо → тише (quieter), близу → ближе (closer), далеко → даље (further — root дал- + -је), често → чешће (more often).
- Suffix -ије: храбро → храбрије (more bravely), весело → веселије (more cheerfully), паметно → паметније (more smartly), рано → раније (earlier), касно → касније (later), лоше → лошије (worse).
- Suffix -ше: лако → лакше (easier), меко → мекше (softer), лепо → лепше (nicer/more beautifully).
- Suppletive (irregular) stems and quantity: добро → боље (better), зло → горе (worse), alongside adverbs of quantity like много → више (more) and мало → мање (less) (see irregular comparatives).
2. Invariance (No Agreement):
Unlike comparative adjectives, which must agree in gender, number, and case with a noun, comparative adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. As a result, they remain completely invariable in form:
• Марко трчи брже. (Marko runs faster.)
• Ана трчи брже. (Ana runs faster — never *бржа!)
• Они трче брже. (They run faster — never *бржи!)
• Ово је мање занимљив филм. (This is a less interesting film — modifying an adjective.)
3. Comparison Syntax:
To compare actions, degree, or circumstances, standard Serbian uses two major patterns from comparison frames:
- од + Genitive: Directly compares against a noun or pronoun: Она ради боље од њега. (She works better than him.)
- него: Compares against a noun or pronoun whose case matches the constituent being compared (nominative when comparing subjects: Она ради боље него он [She works better than he does]; accusative when comparing direct objects: Више воли њега него мене [She likes him more than me]), or introduces contrasting adverbs and clauses (него што): Радимо боље него прошле године. (We are working better than last year.); Вози брже него што је дозвољено. (He drives faster than is permitted.)
Examples (4)
- Ана говори српски много боље него прошле године.
Ana speaks Serbian much better than last year.
Word by Word: Ana speaks Serbian much better than last year.
Uses the irregular comparative adverb 'боље' (from 'добро') with the comparison conjunction 'него'.
- Морамо да радимо брже ако желимо да стигнемо на време.
We have to work faster if we want to arrive on time.
Word by Word: We-must to we-work faster if we-want to we-arrive on time.
The adverb 'брже' modifies the verb phrase 'да радимо' and stays invariable.
- Марија сада трчи знатно брже од мене.
Marija now runs considerably faster than me.
Word by Word: Marija now runs considerably faster from me.
Notice that 'брже' does not change to feminine 'бржа' because it modifies the action 'трчи', followed by 'од' + genitive pronoun 'мене'.
- Они живе ближе центру града него ми.
They live closer to the city center than we do.
Word by Word: They live closer center of-city than we.
The spatial adverb 'близу' forms the comparative 'ближе' to indicate closer physical proximity.
Common Mistakes
Forcing the comparative adverb to agree in gender with a female subject.
Марија трчи бржа од мене.Марија трчи брже од мене.Adverbs modify verbs, not subjects. Therefore, they remain invariable in their neuter-identical ending (-е) regardless of the subject's gender.
Creating analytical comparatives with 'више' instead of the synthetic form.
Он вози више брзо него ти.Он вози брже него ти.In Serbian, qualitative adverbs must take their synthetic comparative form ('брже', 'боље', 'јаче') rather than borrowing the English/Romance analytical pattern with 'више'.
Using 'од' directly before an inflected verb clause instead of 'него што'.
Вози брже од ја сам мислио.Вози брже него што сам мислио.The preposition 'од' can only take a noun or pronoun in the genitive case. Before a subordinate clause, use 'него што'.
