међу / под / над / пред + Accusative / Instrumental
Position and Change of Position
The spatial prepositions међу (between/among), под (under), над (above/over), and пред (in front of/before) take two different cases depending on the spatial relationship: use the Accusative for motion toward a destination (answering Куда? / Where to?), and use the Instrumental for stationary position or internal movement (answering Где? / Where at?).
How It Works
Understanding the dual case government of међу, под, над, and пред is essential for developing accuracy with spatial relations in Serbian.
1. Direction vs. Location
• Accusative (Куда? — Whither?): Indicates movement crossing into a designated zone.
Examples:
— Мачка је скочила под сто (The cat jumped under the table — movement into the zone).
— Ставио је писмо међу књиге (He put the letter among the books).
— Наднео се над мапу (He leaned over the map).
• Instrumental (Где? — Where?): Indicates location in that zone.
Examples:
— Мачка спава под столом (The cat is sleeping under the table — static position).
— Писмо је међу књигама (The letter is among the books).
— Авион кружи над градом (The plane circles above the city).
2. The 'Contained Motion' Principle
A motion verb does not automatically demand the Accusative! If an action occurs entirely inside the space, use the Instrumental:
• Рибе пливају под водом (Fish swim underwater — movement contained under water).
• Деца се играју пред кућом (The children are playing in front of the house).
• Птице лете над реком (Birds are flying above the river — movement within the airspace above the river).
• Они су шетали међу дрвећем (They walked among the trees).
3. Morphological Quirks: Preposition Vocalization and Case Forms
• Preposition Vocalization (вокализација предлога): The prepositions под, над, and пред take the vocalized variants with an inserted vowel -а—yielding пода, нада, and преда—in specific morphophonologically conditioned environments:
1) Before the instrumental 1st-person pronoun мном: While simple stop + nasal combinations across word boundaries are regular and ubiquitous in Serbian (e.g., под мостом, пред мајком, над морем), vocalization is grammatically mandatory before мном to resolve the consonant cluster /dmn-/ (historically rooted in yer vocalization), giving преда мном, пода мном, and нада мном.
2) With clitic accusative pronouns: Prepositions merge phonetically with short accusative personal and reflexive pronouns, producing standard vocalized pairs: преда ме (e.g., Стао је преда ме — He stood before me), преда те (e.g., Стао је преда те — He stood before you), and преда се (e.g., Гледао је преда се — He looked down in front of himself), as well as пода се (e.g., Подвукао је ноге пода се — He tucked his legs under himself). While third-person clitic combinations like преда њ or пода њ are primarily literary or archaic, the 1st, 2nd, and reflexive combinations remain fully standard and natural. In non-reflexive spoken usage, speakers also frequently employ the unvocalized preposition with the full stressed pronoun: пред мене, пред тебе, пред њега, под њега.
• Structural scope of међу: In modern Serbian, међу signifies 'among' and is primarily used with plural nouns or collective nouns (e.g., међу нама, међу дрвећем, међу људима). When denoting a spatial or abstract relationship specifically between two separate entities, contemporary standard usage favors између + Genitive (e.g., између Јована и Милана, rather than међу Јованом и Миланом).
• Instrumental Case Endings: Masculine/neuter singular nouns take -ом or -ем; feminine singular nouns ending in -а take -ом; feminine consonant-stem nouns take -ју / -у or -и (e.g., пред смрћу, под ноћи); and all plural nouns take syncretic Instrumental plural endings -има or -ама (which share identical forms with the Dative and Locative plural).
4. Contrast with Derived Prepositions
Do not mix these with prefixed spatial prepositions from the између, испред, иза group, which exclusively govern the Genitive:
• Стојим пред зградом (+ Instrumental) vs. Стојим испред зграде (+ Genitive)
• Мачка спава под столом (+ Instrumental) vs. Мачка спава испод стола (+ Genitive)
5. Idiomatic and Temporal Extensions
• пред + Accusative expresses temporal anticipation ('just before / shortly before / towards a point in time or event'): пред зору (towards dawn / just before dawn), пред вече (towards evening), пред крај (towards the end), пред испит (right before the exam).
• под + Instrumental often denotes authority, influence, or conditions: под утицајем (under the influence), под притиском (under pressure).
Examples (6)
- Мачка је скочила под кревет чим су гости ушли.
The cat jumped under the bed as soon as the guests entered.
Word by Word: Cat AUX jumped under bed as-soon-as AUX guests entered.
Movement toward a destination (Куда? — under the bed) governs the inanimate masculine noun in the Accusative ('кревет').
- Пас мирно спава под столом у трпезарији.
The dog is sleeping peacefully under the table in the dining room.
Word by Word: Dog peacefully sleeps under table in dining-room.
Static position (Где? — under the table) governs the masculine noun in the Instrumental ('столом').
- Сви су изашли пред зграду да виде шта се десило.
Everyone went out in front of the building to see what happened.
Word by Word: Everyone AUX went-out in-front-of building to see what REFL happened.
Directed motion crossing outdoors to the front (Куда?) takes the feminine noun in the Accusative ('зграду').
- Чекаћу те пред позориштем у седам сати.
I will wait for you in front of the theatre at seven o'clock.
Word by Word: Wait-will-I you in-front-of theatre at seven hours.
Stationary location where the waiting takes place (Где?) takes the neuter noun in the Instrumental ('позориштем').
- Осећао се потпуно опуштено међу пријатељима.
He felt completely relaxed among friends.
Word by Word: Felt REFL completely relaxed among friends.
Location/state amidst multiple people (Где?) takes the plural noun in the Instrumental ('пријатељима').
- Пробудили смо се пред саму зору.
We woke up just before dawn.
Word by Word: Woke-up REFL AUX in-front-of very dawn.
Temporal extension with 'пред' meaning 'approaching a point in time' takes the feminine noun in the Accusative ('зору').
Common Mistakes
Using the Locative case instead of the Instrumental for static location.
Књига је под столу.Књига је под столом.Learners often overgeneralize from 'у' and 'на' (which take the Locative for position). However, 'под', 'над', 'пред', and 'међу' NEVER take the Locative; their static counterpart is always the Instrumental.
Using the Accusative whenever any motion verb appears, even for contained motion.
Деца су трчала пред школу цео дан.Деца су трчала пред школом цео дан.Using the Accusative implies repeated boundary crossing (running to the front of the school over and over). For activity taking place entirely within the zone in front of the school, use the Instrumental.
Confusing the simple preposition 'пред' (+ Instrumental) with derived 'испред' (+ Genitive).
Чекам те испред позориштем.Чекам те испред позоришта.Prepositions prefixed with 'из-' (испред, испод, изнад, између) strictly take the Genitive. Only the root prepositions (пред, под, над, међу) take the Instrumental for location.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn the dual-case spatial prepositions 'међу', 'под', 'над', and 'пред', learners must know how Serbian alternates cases for direction vs. location (first encountered with 'у' and 'на'), as well as how to inflect nouns into the accusative and instrumental cases.
