Questions About Past Events

To ask a yes-no question about a past event in Serbian, you use either the interrogative particle phrase Да ли followed immediately by the short auxiliary verb, or you invert the clause by starting with the stressed auxiliary verb followed by ли. The main verb always appears as a past active participle (радни глаголски придев) matching the subject's gender and number.

How It Works

In standard Serbian, asking yes-no questions in the past tense (перфекат) relies on two primary syntactic strategies. Both convey the exact same meaning and are equally normative across spoken and written registers.

1. The 'Да ли' Pattern
• In this pattern, the compound question marker да ли occupies the first clausal position.
• The auxiliary clitics for first and second persons as well as third-person plural (сам, си, смо, сте, су) strictly attach directly to да ли at the very beginning of the enclitic cluster, preceding any pronominal clitics: e.g., Да ли си му рекао? (Did you tell him?), Да ли сте јуче гледали онај филм? (Did you watch that movie yesterday?).
• Only the third-person singular auxiliary је changes its position relative to other clitics or drops out with reflexive се (detailed below). In simple clauses without other clitics, it follows да ли directly: Да ли је стигао? (Did he arrive?).

2. The Inverted 'Auxiliary + ли' Pattern
• In standard Serbian, past questions formed with the interrogative particle ли attach it directly to the auxiliary verb form of бити:

  • 1st sg: Јесам ли...
  • 2nd sg: Јеси ли...
  • 3rd sg: Је ли... (Standard 3rd-person singular uses је as the host: Је ли дошао?)
  • 1st pl: Јесмо ли...
  • 2nd pl: Јесте ли... (This is exclusively 2nd-person plural or polite address: Јесте ли чули?)
  • 3rd pl: Јесу ли...

• Example: Јеси ли му већ вратио књигу? (Did you return the book to him already?)
• Note: Modern standard Serbian strictly places ли directly on the auxiliary verb (Јеси ли видео?). Forming questions by placing the participle before ли (such as archaic *Видео ли си?) is not used in standard speech or modern writing.

3. Enclitic Ordering and Special Clitic Rules
• Auxiliary placement before pronouns: Almost all auxiliary clitics (сам, си, смо, сте, су) sit immediately after да ли and precede any pronominal clitics (short pronouns).
• Third-person singular placement: Unlike the other auxiliaries, the 3rd-person singular auxiliary clitic је moves behind all pronominal clitics to the very end of the clitic cluster (је at the end of the clitic group): Да ли га је позвала? (Did she invite him?).
• Reflexive deletion vs. retention: In an enclitic cluster (such as after да ли or another clause-initial word), the unstressed auxiliary clitic је is omitted next to the reflexive particle се (се in the perfect tense): Да ли се пробудио? (NOT *Да ли се је пробудио?). In contrast, in the inverted ли-construction where је serves as the clause-initial host, it is required and never omitted: Је ли се пробудио?.

Examples (4)

  1. Да ли сте јуче гледали онај филм?

Did you watch that movie yesterday?

Word by Word: Whether did-you yesterday watched that movie?

Uses 'да ли' followed immediately by the second-person plural auxiliary 'сте' and the masculine plural active participle 'гледали'.

  2. Јеси ли му већ вратио књигу?

Did you already return the book to him?

Word by Word: Are-you whether to-him already returned book?

Uses inverted 'Јеси ли' with the dative pronominal clitic 'му' adhering to second position right after 'ли'.

  3. Да ли га је Ана позвала на рођендан?

Did Ana invite him to the birthday party?

Word by Word: Whether him has Ana invited to birthday?

Illustrates clitic ordering where 3rd person singular auxiliary 'је' follows the accusative object clitic 'га'.

  4. Је ли се Марко већ пробудио?

    Has Marko already woken up?

Word by Word: Has whether self Marko already woken-up?

Shows the 3rd person singular inverted form 'Је ли' with the reflexive particle 'се'.

Common Mistakes

  • Omitting the auxiliary verb entirely in 'да ли' questions under English influence.

    Да ли ти видео Марка?
    Да ли си видео Марка?

'Да ли' is an interrogative particle, not a past tense auxiliary like English 'did'. You must always include the appropriate present auxiliary form of 'бити' ('си', 'је', etc.).

  • Retaining the enclitic auxiliary 'је' alongside the reflexive particle 'се' in 'да ли' questions.

Да ли се је Марко пробудио?
    Да ли се Марко пробудио?

In the 3rd person singular with the reflexive particle 'се', the enclitic auxiliary 'је' is regularly omitted in standard Serbian. Do not include 'је' after 'се' in 'да ли' questions.

  • Using 'Јесте ли' instead of 'Је ли' for third-person singular subjects.

    Јесте ли он стигао?
    Је ли он стигао?

Although 'јесте' is the stressed 3rd person singular present form of 'бити', the inverted question pattern strictly uses 'Је ли'. 'Јесте ли' is reserved exclusively for second-person plural or polite 'ви'.

To form questions in the past tense, learners need to already understand how the past tense is constructed (auxiliary 'biti' + active participle), how interrogative markers like 'да ли' and 'ли' work, and how clitics are ordered within the question frame.
