се (перфекат)

Reflexive Past Tense

Level 2Sounds Like se u perfektu

The past tense (перфекат) of reflexive verbs uses the particle се together with the agreeing past participle. In the 3rd person singular (он, она, оно), the auxiliary verb је is customarily omitted in standard modern Serbian (e.g., Она се вратила rather than the older or dialectal Она се је вратила). However, the auxiliary is fully preserved in other persons (Ја сам се вратио) and under negation (Она се није вратила).

How It Works

When forming the past tense of reflexive verbs (повратни глаголи), Serbian follows the general pattern of the перфекат using an active past participle (радни глаголски придев) and an auxiliary verb from бити. However, constructions with the clitic се follow specific word-order and omission conventions.

1. Customary 3rd Person Singular 'је-drop' With 'се'
In affirmative 3rd person singular statements (он, она, оно), dropping the auxiliary clitic је when се is present is the standard norm in contemporary Serbian. While older texts, folklore, and some dialects retain је alongside се (e.g., се је or је се), standard modern usage consistently omits it across reflexive, medial, and impersonal constructions (безличне реченице са се):

  • Ана се насмејала. (Ana laughed.) [Standard modern Serbian consistently favors this; Ана се је насмејала is archaic or dialectal]
  • Воз се зауставио. (The train stopped.)
  • Све се променило. (Everything changed.)
  • Говорило се о томе. (People talked about it / It was spoken about.)

In neutral non-reflexive past statements, је is normally required (e.g., Петар је дошао), though narrative styles can leave it out (крњи перфекат). With се, however, omitting је is the expected standard form in affirmative sentences.

2. Auxiliaries Remain in Other Persons
Do not generalize the omission of the auxiliary to other grammatical persons. In the 1st and 2nd persons singular, as well as all plural forms, the auxiliary clitic is required. In clitic clusters, the verbal auxiliary clitic always precedes се:

  • 1st sg: Ја сам се спремио / спремила.
  • 2nd sg: Ти си се уплашио / уплашила.
  • 1st pl: Ми смо се упознали.
  • 2nd pl: Ви сте се одморили.
  • 3rd pl: Они / оне су се вратили / вратиле.

3. Adding Dative Clitics into the Cluster
When a short dative pronoun (ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им) appears in the same clause, it is placed between the auxiliary clitic and се (Order: Auxiliary → Dative → се):

  • Ја сам му се јавио. (I said hello to him / reached out to him.)
  • Свидело му се ново одело. (He liked the new suit.) [Because standard 3rd person singular omits је, only Dative + се remains]

4. Word Order and Subject Pronoun Dropping
Serbian frequently drops unstressed subject pronouns (изостављање личне заменице). When the subject pronoun is omitted and the sentence begins with the active participle, clitics follow immediately in second position (друго место у реченици):

  • Спремио сам се на време. (I got ready on time.)
  • Насмејала се гласно. (She laughed out loud.)
  • Упознали смо се јуче. (We met yesterday.)

5. Negation and Questions in the Past
Negation and question structures treat 3rd person singular је differently (негација у перфекту, питања у перфекту):

  • Negation: The stressed negative auxiliary није is never dropped: Марко се није вратио. (Marko did not return.)
  • Questions with 'да ли': Да ли acts as the question particle and је remains omitted: Да ли се Ана насмејала? (Did Ana laugh?)
  • Questions with 'је ли': When ли is used, је is kept as the host for ли at the start of the clause: Је ли се Ана насмејала? (Did Ana laugh?)

6. Clitic Placement and Orthography
The particle се is an unaccented enclitic word (енклитика). It must always be written as an independent word, never joined to the verb as a prefix or suffix.

Examples (5)

  1. Марко се јуче касно вратио са посла.

Marko returned late from work yesterday.

Word by Word: Marko REFL yesterday late returned from work.

In the 3rd person singular masculine affirmative, 'се' is used and auxiliary 'је' is omitted.

  2. Она се изненада окренула и насмејала.

She suddenly turned around and smiled.

Word by Word: She REFL suddenly turned and smiled.

Both reflexive verbs 'окренути се' and 'насмејати се' drop the auxiliary 'је' in the feminine singular.

  3. Ја сам се јутрос рано пробудио.

I woke up early this morning.

    Word by Word: I AUX.1SG REFL this-morning early woke-up.

In the 1st person singular, the auxiliary 'сам' is strictly required alongside 'се'.

  4. Ми смо се упознали прошле године у Београду.

We met each other last year in Belgrade.

Word by Word: We AUX.1PL REFL met last year in Belgrade.

Reciprocal reflexive in the 1st person plural retaining the auxiliary 'смо'.

  5. Све се брзо променило, а није се знало зашто.

Everything changed quickly, and nobody knew why.

Word by Word: Everything REFL quickly changed, and NEG-AUX.3SG REFL known why.

Illustrates 3rd person neuter 'је'-drop in the affirmative clause ('променило се') versus retention of negative 'није' ('није се знало').

Common Mistakes

  • Including auxiliary 'је' alongside 'се' in 3rd person singular affirmative statements.

Ана се је пробудила у седам сати.
Ана се пробудила у седам сати.

In standard modern Serbian, the auxiliary 'је' is obligatorily dropped when 'се' is present in the 3rd person singular.

  • Dropping the auxiliary verb in persons other than 3rd singular.

    Ја се сетио свега.
    Ја сам се сетио свега.

The omission rule applies exclusively to 3rd person singular 'је'. The 1st and 2nd persons singular and all plurals require their respective auxiliaries (сам, си, смо, сте, су).

  • Dropping the auxiliary under negation or combining 'не' directly with the verb.

    Он се не бријао јутрос.
    Он се није бријао јутрос.

Negation blocks the drop. Past tense negation requires the tonic negative auxiliary 'није', not 'не'.
