је
The Auxiliary Je in Clitic Groups
While auxiliary verbs normally appear first in a Serbian clitic group (before object pronouns), the 3rd-person singular auxiliary је is the sole exception: it obligatorily moves to the absolute end of the clitic cluster (e.g., Он му га је дао).
How It Works
Understanding the position of је is essential for forming accurate sentences with the present copula бити and compound tenses like the ordinary past tense.
1. Contrast With Other Auxiliaries
Normally, verbal auxiliaries lead the pronominal cluster in slot 2:
• Они су му га дали. (Auxiliary су precedes dative му and accusative га)
• Ја сам му је показао. (Auxiliary сам precedes dative му and accusative је)
Importantly, this cluster-final placement is an idiosyncratic property unique to enclitic је (both as an auxiliary and as a copular verb). It does not apply to other 3rd-person singular auxiliaries such as ће or би, which occupy normal auxiliary slot 2:
• Он ће му га дати. (Slot 2 auxiliary ће precedes pronouns)
• Он би му га дао. (Slot 2 auxiliary би precedes pronouns)
• Он му га је дао. (Dative му + Accusative га + Enclitic је)
2. Auxiliary and Copular Use
The cluster-final rule applies to enclitic је across all functions, not just the past tense:
• Auxiliary: Петар му га је дао јуче.
• Copula: То му је посао. / Шта ти је?
In all these cases, је sits at the end of the clitic group, which anchors in second position in the sentence—either after the first syntactic constituent or after the first stressed word (clitics after the first constituent).
3. Variations and Nuances
- Dissimilation to 'ју' (Not an Exception to Order): When feminine accusative је pairs with auxiliary је, it dissimilates to ју instead of је purely for phonological reasons (Он ју је видео). Notice that the clitic order remains completely regular: accusative ју (slot 4) still precedes auxiliary је (slot 6).
- The Reflexive Drop: In contemporary neutral standard Serbian, the 3rd-person singular auxiliary је is standardly and almost always omitted alongside the reflexive particle се in the past tense: Марко се насмејао (the unreduced form Марко се је насмејао belongs to older literature or regional registers). Crucially, this omission applies exclusively to 3rd-person singular је; all other persons retain their auxiliary: Ја сам се насмејао, Они су се насмејали.
- Structural Exception in Questions: The true structural exception to cluster-final је occurs in questions with ли introduced by је ли. In this construction, је attaches directly to ли clause-initially, ahead of any object pronouns: Је ли му га дао?
Examples (4)
- Он му га је дао.
He gave it to him.
Word by Word: He to-him it is given.
The dative clitic 'му' and accusative clitic 'га' come before the auxiliary 'је'.
- Да ли јој је Петар одговорио?
Did Petar answer her?
Word by Word: Whether question-particle to-her is Petar answered?
After the question frame 'да ли', dative 'јој' precedes the auxiliary 'је'.
- Марко ју је видео у парку.
Marko saw her in the park.
Word by Word: Marko her is seen in park.
The feminine direct object pronoun dissimilates to 'ју' directly in front of auxiliary 'је'.
- Она му је јуче све објаснила.
She explained everything to him yesterday.
Word by Word: She to-him is yesterday everything explained.
The dative clitic 'му' precedes auxiliary 'је' immediately after the subject pronoun.
Common Mistakes
Placing auxiliary 'је' before object pronouns by analogy with other auxiliaries.
Он је му га дао.Он му га је дао.While forms like 'сам' and 'су' come first (e.g., 'Они су му га дали'), auxiliary 'је' moves to the very end of the clitic group.
Retaining auxiliary 'је' alongside the reflexive particle 'се' in neutral modern Serbian.
Она се је насмејала.Она се насмејала.In neutral contemporary standard Serbian, the third-person auxiliary 'је' is standardly omitted when reflexive 'се' is present. Note that this drop only applies to 3rd person singular 'је', not other persons (e.g., 'Ја сам се насмејао').
Repeating 'је' instead of dissimilating the accusative pronoun to 'ју'.
Он је је позвао на ручак.Он ју је позвао на ручак.When feminine accusative clitic 'је' precedes auxiliary 'је', it regularizes to 'ју' to prevent duplicate sounds.
How It Connects

Before understanding why the auxiliary 'је' appears at the very end of a clitic chain rather than at the front like other verbal clitics, learners must understand basic clitic cluster order and how the auxiliary 'је' functions in the past tense (especially with reflexive 'се').
