да + Present-Tense Verb
Purpose with Da
Use да + present tense to state the goal or intended outcome of an action (answering ради чега? — "for what purpose?"). It is standard across all registers in Serbian, especially after verbs of motion.
How It Works
In Serbian, final or purpose clauses (намерне реченице) explain the objective behind an action.
1. Core Structure and Verbs
This construction typically attaches to main clauses with verbs of movement (such as отићи, доћи, ићи) or deliberate actions:
• Отишао сам у продавницу да купим хлеб. (I went to the store to buy bread.)
2. The Role of Aspect
A crucial rule of this pattern concerns verb aspect:
• The verb after да is overwhelmingly perfective because an intention usually targets a specific, bounded outcome.
• While the perfective present cannot stand alone in independent clauses specifically to denote an ongoing action occurring at the moment of speech (*Ја купим cannot mean "I am buying right now"), it is fully natural and expected in subordinate purpose clauses.
• An imperfective verb is used when the intended goal is an ongoing, unbounded activity (e.g., Остао је код куће да чува децу — "He stayed at home to look after the children") or a habitual, repeated action (e.g., Сваког јутра устаје рано да вежба — "Every morning he gets up early to exercise").
3. Same vs. Different Subjects and Negative Purpose
The pattern works seamlessly whether the subject remains the same or changes:
• Same subject: Сели смо напред да боље видимо. (We sat in front so we could see better.)
• Different subjects: Отвори прозор да уђе свеж ваздух. (Open the window so fresh air comes in.)
• Negative purpose ("so as not to / lest"): Simply negate the present tense using да не: Пожури да не закасниш. (Hurry up so you don't arrive late.)
4. Word Order, Punctuation, and Related Patterns
• Strict position after the main clause: Purpose clauses with да + present must always follow the main clause. In this canonical postposed order, standard Serbian orthography does not use a comma before да (e.g., Дошао сам да разговарамо). If placed at the start of a sentence, да + презент functions as a conditional clause rather than purpose (e.g., Да имам новца, отишао бих на море — "If I had money, I would go to the seaside").
• Preposed purpose clauses: When an intention clause precedes the main clause, use да би + радни глаголски придев instead, which is obligatorily separated by a comma (e.g., Да би купио хлеб, отишао је у продавницу).
• Comparison with 'да би': Both да + present and да би + active past participle are standard and widely used in everyday speech and writing.
• Distinction from complements: Do not confuse purpose with object complements (желим да...), which answer шта? ("what?"). Purpose clauses answer ради чега? ("for what purpose?").
Examples (4)
- Дошао сам да ти помогнем.
I came to help you.
Word by Word: Came I-am that to-you I-help.
Follows a verb of motion (дошао сам) with the perfective present (помогнем) sharing the same subject.
- Отвори прозор да уђе свеж ваздух.
Open the window so that fresh air can come in.
Word by Word: Open window that enters fresh air.
Here the subject shifts from the command (ти) to the incoming air (свеж ваздух), showing how da + present bridges different subjects.
- Идем у продавницу да купим млеко и хлеб.
I am going to the store to buy milk and bread.
Word by Word: I-go to store that I-buy milk and bread.
Standard purpose clause after a verb of motion expressing an intended single result.
- Позвао нас је да разговарамо о послу.
He called us to talk about work.
Word by Word: Called us he-is that we-talk about work.
Deliberate action in the main clause governing a purpose clause in the present tense.
Common Mistakes
Using an infinitive directly after 'да' instead of a conjugated present verb.
Дошао сам да помоћи.Дошао сам да помогнем.English speakers often translate 'to help' literally as an infinitive. In Serbian, 'да' must be followed by an inflected present-tense form matching the subject.
Mixing the conditional particle 'би' with the present tense.
Учим да бих положим испит.Учим да положим испит.Do not blend the two purpose patterns. Either use 'да' with the present tense ('да положим') or 'да би' with the active past participle ('да бих положио').
Using an imperfective verb when intending a single, completed goal.
Отишао је у пекару да купује хлеб.Отишао је у пекару да купи хлеб.Because purpose usually means one bounded, finished goal, the perfective ('купи') is the normal choice. The imperfective ('купује') suggests a repeated or ongoing activity.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To express purpose using 'да + презент', you need to form present tense verbs reliably, understand how verbal aspect affects the expression of an intended outcome, and be comfortable with the 'да + present' syntactic structure.
- Verb Aspect
Purpose clauses in Serbian frequently require choosing perfective aspect in the present tense to express a completed goal or intention.
Level 2 - моћи / морати / требати + да + Present-Tense VerbAbility and Necessity
Familiarity with the subordinating conjunction 'да' followed by a present verb in modal constructions provides the syntactic foundation for using 'да + present' in subordinate clauses of purpose.
