Languedocien and Gascon

Level 6

Gascon has its own forms, and this course does not teach them.

How It Works

Languedocien (this course)Gascon
far (to do)har or hèr
filh (son)hilh
fèsta (party)hèsta
nòstre (our)nòste
fa calor or fa caud (it is hot)hè calor
ostal (house)ostau
caval (horse)chivau

The most visible difference is the sound at the start of a word. Where Languedocien has f, Gascon has h: filh and hilh, fèsta and hèsta. The Congrès reference labels the two sets of forms as lang and gasc.

Gascon greetings also differ. You may meet Adishatz in Gascon texts, while this course uses Bonjorn and Adieu.

Do not mix these forms into your own Languedocien sentences. If a word looks like Occitan but unfamiliar, check whether it begins with h where you expect f.
