de
The Preposition De
De shows where something comes from and who owns it.
How It Works
De connects two things. It means "from" for origin (Joan es de Rodés.), "of" for ownership (la cadièra de Maria) and "of" for contents (un veire d'aiga, a glass of water).
Before a vowel it becomes d': d'aiga, d'Albi. Before lo and los it joins them as del and dels: lo libre del dròlle. Before la and las it stays apart: de la femna.
For ownership, name the thing first and the owner after de. English puts the owner first with 's: la cadièra de Maria is "Maria's chair".
| With | Result | Example |
|---|---|---|
| a vowel | d' | d'aiga |
| lo | del | del dròlle |
| los | dels | dels amics |
| la | de la | de la femna |
