Languedocien and the Other Varieties

Foundations

Occitan has six main varieties. This course teaches Languedocien and does not mix in forms from the others.

How It Works

Occitan is a Romance language of southern France, with speakers also in the Val d'Aran in Spain and in the Occitan valleys of Italy. It is usually divided into six varieties: Languedocien, Gascon, Provençal, Limousin, Auvergnat and Vivaro-Alpine.

Languedocien covers a large part of the south of France, including the areas around Tolosa, Montpelhièr, Carcassona, Albi and Rodés. Many learning books and news sites use it, and it is the variety this course teaches.

The varieties are close, and speakers can usually follow each other. They differ in some sounds, some endings and some words. For example, the Languedocien word ostal (house) is ostau in Provençal.

In this course:

  • Every example is Languedocien.
  • Where Languedocien has two correct forms, the examples use one and an entry tells you about the other.
  • Gascon, Provençal and the other varieties appear only when an entry explains a difference.
