-ून ठेवणे

Doing Something in Readiness

Level 4Sounds Like ̔ūna ṭhēvaṇē

It also leaves the result in place: दार उघडून ठेवा means leave the door open.

How It Works

ठेवणे means “to keep” or “to put”. In this pattern the first verb does the job, and ठेवणे keeps the result for later.

UseExample
getting readyतिकीट काढून ठेव.
getting readyआईने पोळ्या करून ठेवल्या.
packing aheadमी रात्रीच बॅग भरून ठेवतो.
leaving as it isदार उघडून ठेवा.

Compare तिकीट काढले (I booked a ticket) with तिकीट काढून ठेवले (I booked it ahead, so it is ready). The second sentence tells the listener that the matter is settled.

The pattern is popular in everyday requests: चहा करून ठेवा, पत्ता लिहून ठेव. Both ask for something to be ready when you come back.

The past form agrees with an object that has no -ला, and a third-person doer takes -ने: आईने पोळ्या करून ठेवल्या. With मी, there is no -ने, so मी बॅग भरून ठेवली.

The words आधी (first) and उद्यासाठी (for tomorrow) fit naturally, since the pattern is about being ready: आधी सगळे लिहून ठेवा. (Write everything down first.)

Examples (5)

  1. तिकीट काढून ठेव.

    Book the ticket in advance.

काढून ठेव asks for the ticket to be ready ahead of time.

  2. आईने सकाळीच पोळ्या करून ठेवल्या.

Mom made the rotis in the morning and kept them ready.

    ठेवल्या agrees with पोळ्या, a feminine plural.

  3. मी रात्रीच बॅग भरून ठेवतो.

I pack the bag the night before. A man is speaking.

भरून ठेवतो ends in -तो because the speaker is a man.

  4. दार उघडून ठेवा.

    Leave the door open.

उघडून ठेवा keeps the door in that state.

  5. मी उद्यासाठी भाजी चिरून ठेवते.

I chop the vegetables ahead for tomorrow. A woman is speaking.

चिरून ठेवते says the work is done in advance.

Common Mistakes

  • Not matching the past form to the object.

    मी बॅग भरून ठेवला.
    मी बॅग भरून ठेवली.

बॅग is feminine, so the past form is ठेवली.

  • Using the -त form.

    तिकीट काढत ठेव.
    तिकीट काढून ठेव.

    The first verb takes -ून.
