-ून देणे

Doing Something for Someone Else

Level 4Sounds Like ̔ūna dēṇē

The person who gets the benefit takes -ला: मी तुला चहा करून देते.

How It Works

देणे means “give”, so -ून देणे gives the result of an action to someone else: you write it, bring it, make it, and hand it over.

Who gainsPatternExample
the doer-ून घेणेमी पत्ता लिहून घेतला.
someone else-ून देणेमी तुला पत्ता लिहून दिला.

Name the person who gains with -ला: मला, तुला, तिला, त्यांना. Without it the sentence does not say who gets the benefit. Compare चहा करून देते (I'll make tea and give it) with तुला चहा करून देते (I'll make tea and give it to you).

The past form agrees with the thing done when that thing has no -ला (neuter if it has -ला). In तिने मला वाट दाखवून दिली, दिली agrees with वाट (feminine); the person मला does not change it. In बाबांनी माझे काम करून दिले, दिले agrees with काम (neuter).

A request uses दे to a friend and द्या to a stranger: मला हे लिहून द्या. A polite offer uses the present: मी तुम्हाला रस्ता दाखवून देतो.

A shop sentence shows it well: दादा, हे बांधून द्या. (Please wrap this up for me.) To a friend, the same request ends in दे: हे बांधून दे.

Examples (5)

  1. मला हे लिहून दे.

    Write this down for me.

लिहून दे asks someone to write it for the speaker.

  2. तिने मला वाट दाखवून दिली.

    She showed me the way.

    दिली agrees with वाट, a feminine noun.

  3. बाबांनी माझे काम करून दिले.

Dad did my work for me.

    दिले agrees with काम, a neuter noun.

  4. मी तुला पुस्तक आणून देतो.

I'll bring you the book. A man is speaking.

आणून देतो offers to bring it to तुला.

  5. मी तुला चहा करून देते.

I'll make you tea. A woman is speaking.

करून देते ends in -ते because the speaker is a woman.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out -ला for the person who gains.

    मी तू चहा करून देते.
    मी तुला चहा करून देते.

The person who gets the benefit takes -ला.

  • Not matching दिले to the object.

    बाबांनी माझे काम करून दिली.
    बाबांनी माझे काम करून दिले.

काम is neuter, so the past form is दिले.
